    Toyota Tundra Car Guide

    TOYOTA TUNDRAOverview

Toyota introduced the second generation of the popular Tundra pickup truck in 2007. The 2020 Toyota Tundra continues that second generation. While there have been refreshes over the years, the platform is fundamentally the same, which is a testament to its design. The Tundra is a no-nonsense workhorse with a V-8 engine that offers excellent towing capacities and can be kitted for off-road driving.

    NOTEWORTHY FEATURES

    The Most Reliable Full-Size Pickup

The second-generation Toyota Tundra is the most reliable full-size pickup on the market. This assertion is based on reliability research, which involves more than 500,000 unique Tundra trucks over the span of 12 model years. This assessment is supported by J.D. Power, which awarded the Tundra its highest honor in the Large Light Duty Truck segment. Kelley Blue Book had a similar appraisal and recognized the Tundra as its Best Full-Size Pickup Truck.

    Standard V-8 Performance

Every Tundra sold features an i-FORCE 5.7-liter V-8 engine under the hood. The powertrain mates this engine to a six-speed automatic transmission that is responsive and shifts smooth. The standard Tundra also boasts a heavy-duty TripleTech frame with an integrated hitch. This base equipment allows you to tow more than 10,000 pounds per its SAE J2807 rating.

    Off-Road Performance

The Toyota Tundra is a highly capable off-roader as well. Opting for the second-tier SR5 trim gives you access to the TRD Off-Road equipment package. The TRD Off-Road package is also available on the Limited and 1794 Edition, or you can opt for the TRD Pro, which is an off-road-focused trim that includes the TRD Off-Road package and more. The package features 18-inch wheels, Bilstein trail-tuned shock absorbers, skid plates, tow hooks, LED headlights, fog lamps, and special badging.

    ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

    Refinement

Pickup trucks and consumer expectations have evolved significantly in the nearly 15 years that the second-generation Tundra has been on the road. Critics note its "bare-bones approach" and compare it to the refinement offered by the recently redesigned competition. Considerations should include ride stiffness, overall size, fuel performance, and personalization options. Consumer Reports calls it fully modern while noting that it was once considered the "Camry of pickups" but may now be the "least refined" in its segment.

    Driver-Assist Features

Its driver-assistance package is an area where that aging refinement rears its head. It lacks the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 package that the brand includes standard on many models and instead features the older, original Safety Sense package. You do get pre-collision detection, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alerts, and dynamic radar cruise control, but no other driver-assist features are available as individual options or in add-on packages.

    Interior Design

The automotive division of U.S. News lists "outdated interior" as a con. This is an interesting consideration due to how much pickup truck interiors have evolved in recent years. On the plus side, the newest model adds Apple and Android device integration as well as an 8-inch touch screen as an option. The spacious cabin may have been ahead of its time and provides plenty of legroom for adults in the rear seating, but the control layout may feel dated and can be hard to reach.
