    Convertibles Car Guide

    CONVERTIBLESOverview

Convertibles feel great to drive and look cool on the road, but there are a lot of things to consider when you decide to buy one. In the past, convertible owners would have to pull over and stop the vehicle to put the top on; often, drivers found themselves in rainstorms with their tops down. Storage space was at a minimum. Plastic windows that got scratched or cracked were another downside. The good news is that many modern convertibles feature upgrades and improvements that retain the vehicles' fun amenities while eliminating most of their drawbacks.

    NOTEWORTHY FEATURES

    Freedom and Flexibility

The open road has a whole new meaning when you're behind the wheel of a convertible with the top down, sunlight caressing your face and breezes blowing through your hair. Driving is an emotional experience as well as a matter of getting from point A to point B, and nothing satisfies quite like driving with the top down. Today's drivers don't have to sacrifice enjoyment for practical considerations since they can find power-operated hard and soft tops that they can convert when the car is in motion. Of course, you can always drive with the top up when you want to.

    Convenience and Comfort

You will never have to worry about blind spots when you're driving in the open air. It's a snap to spot hidden parking spots and maneuver around other vehicles to grab them. No matter how tall you are, you'll always have all the headroom you need.

    Improved Sturdiness and Safety

Better engineering gives today's convertibles more rigid bodies, making them easier to handle. There are also many safety features you may not be aware of, including three-point harness safety belts, front and side air bags, and a roll bar that automatically deploys at the detection of a possible accident.

    ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

    More Expensive

Convertibles generally cost more to purchase than a similarly equipped coupe by the same maker. This is due in part to the need for extra parts and design considerations to make the retracting top work properly with the body of the car. Because convertibles are heavier to accommodate their roof mechanisms, they cost more to fuel. They may also cost more to insure because they need more frequent repairs.

    Noisy

The trade-off for all that open-air freedom is the road noise that goes with it. You won't be able to shield yourself from the thumps and rattles of heavy trucks, the vrooms of passing motorcycles, or the unwanted shouts of drivers or pedestrians trying to get your attention. It will also be harder to enjoy a conversation with your passengers or hear the tunes you want to listen to.

    Security

While it's always advisable to keep valuables out of sight, it's a must with a convertible. Especially with a soft top, it's easy to see into and break into the vehicle. Since you won't have a lot of storage space, you'll need to take larger valuables with you whenever you leave the car.
