    Power and Performance

    Most of today's SUVs have either a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine. However, some SUVs have the option of V-8 engines as well. The type of engine and fuel capacity changes as the SUV gets larger. There are hybrid SUVs on the market as well. A majority of the SUVs on the market are capable of 25 to 30 miles per gallon, according to Edmunds.

    Comfort and Amenities

    The larger SUVs offer a third-row seat a lot of the time, but smaller SUVs tend to be more comfortable, according to Car and Driver. Most SUVs have the option of a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, and these displays connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The entertainment system also comes with backseat viewing with an overhead screen or screens on the back of the front seats. There are many other outlets and USB connections for other types of electronics as well. According to Business Insider, the Volvo XC90 is one of the top SUVs for technology because of its 360-view camera and semi-autonomous features.

    Advanced Safety Technology

    Many drivers prefer SUVs because they are higher off the ground than sedans. Today's SUVs offer more safety controls, such as alerts for lane drifting and emergency braking. Many SUVs are also equipped with parking assist and more. Kelly Blue Book rated the Honda Passport in the top three vehicles for safety. The Passport has all these features as well as forward-collision warnings, multi-angle cameras, and more.

    ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

    Visibility

    SUVs have a different shape than other vehicles. It can sometimes be difficult to see the blind spots of the auto. This can be a safety concern when switching lanes or turning. Parking an SUV can be a little more difficult as well.

    Maneuverability

    SUVs can be hard to control and maneuver in certain circumstances. SUVs have the ability to go off-road, yet on certain roads, they can be hard to drive. SUVs also have more of a tendency to flip or roll than low-centered vehicles, which can make them less ideal for new drivers, according to Car and Driver.

    Size

    Another reason that an SUV might not be a great fit for new drivers is their size. SUVs are wider than standard vehicles. This can make parking a little more difficult because it is harder to fit in parking spaces.
