BMW is short for the name Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, but its English interpretation is Bavarian Engine Works Company. BMW was founded upon engine performance and the derivatives of it during the vehicle's operation. As the brand evolved, it concentrated on the coupe, which resulted in the stylish models manufactured today. In the 2020 coupe lineup, BMW produces the 2 Series Coupe, 2 Series Gran Coupe, 4 Series Coupe, 4 Series Gran Coupe, 8 Series Coupe, 8 Series Gran Coupe, M8 Coupe, M8 Gran Coupe and others.
BMW continues its evolution of coupes that have its signature series of powerful engines. The coupe continues to perform at a high level from years past to the latest series of coupes. The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers a turbocharged six-cylinder that generates 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is excellent in its class. The signature trend continues with the turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine netting 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. BMW began its brand on engine performance, and the performance continues to this day.
The wide-body style provides plenty of cabin space by offering wide, plush seats and more than sufficient legroom. Even the 2 Series Coupe is known for its superior seating and high-quality leather. Over the years, the cabin continues its trend in the 8 Series Coupe that allows the 2020 model to provide even more cabin space and legroom.
Driving aids and technology work well together to keep the driver and its occupants safe by providing a series of options that make for enhanced passenger experiences. BMW coupes of a few years ago included driving aids such as 10-way power front seats, parking sensors, keyless ignition and entry, Bluetooth, a navigation system, and voice controls, such as in the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. The rear cross-traffic alert and the rearview cameras offer a more extensive view, and optional features like the adaptive cruise control are available in the 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe.
As with most coupes, there is limited seating capacity for the back seat passenger. From older modeled BMW coupes to the latest model, taller passengers will need to sit up front while the rear seat is best suited for shorter adults and kids.
There is limited rear headroom in the coupe. Due to the design of the BMW coupe, including a sloping roof, the rear passengers may experience tight quarters because of the lack of extended inches afforded in most sedan designs. Whether it's the four-door coupe such as in the 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe or the 2019 BMW 8 Series, the roof is not extended backward for rear passengers.
Limited trunk space may pose some challenges for transporting items in the coupe. However, the hardtop coupe provides even more problems that restrict the amount of offered cargo space.
