The 2016 Volkswagen Passat is a capable midsize car for those with a mindful budget. It comes with a choice of two powertrains, either the 170-horsepower turbocharged 1.8-liter V-4 paired with an automatic six-speed transmission or the 280-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 paired with an automated-manual (or DSG) six-speed transmission, and five different trims: S, SEL, SEL Premium, SE and R-Line. Standard with the 2016 Passat are features like automatic dual-zone climate control and a complete infotainment system.

Built for Comfort

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat has room to spare in its spacious interior. The vehicle seats five and comes with cloth upholstery standard. In the upper trims, leatherette and pure leather seating upgrades are available as are heated front and rear seats and power-adjustable front seats. Legroom and headroom in both the front and back are generous. Its trunk is also suitably spacious, at 15.9 cubic feet, ensuring your belongings don't encroach on your cabin comfort.

Keeps You Safe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) give the 2016 Volkswagen Passat top safety scores, with the former giving it five out of five stars and the latter naming it a Top Safety Pick+. Features that help contribute to these excellent safety scores include a built-in rearview camera that comes standard with all models as well as rear side-curtain and front side air bags, stability and traction control, and anti-lock disc brakes. Automatic park assist and parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning are also available.

Solid Engines

Both choices of engines that come with the 2016 Volkswagen Passat are solid and powerful motors that offer a smooth and quiet ride. They are also both fuel-efficient engines, giving the 2016 Passat 20-25 mpg in the city and 28-36 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, and a rare turn for Volkswagen vehicles, a turbo-diesel engine option is not available for the 2016 Passat.

Soft Accelerations

In the get-up-and-go department, the 2016 Volkswagen Passat lags a bit behind its rivals. The DSG transmission is sluggish to respond, and acceleration is slow. Other driving dynamics are similarly lagging, lacking the nimbleness of other cars in its class.

Uninspiring Infotainment System

To its credit, the 2016 Volkswagen Passat comes with a full infotainment system that includes a 5-inch touch screen, six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and USB port. It's just not as sophisticated or responsive as those in many other midsize cars. The touch screen is also smaller, even in the upgraded system, which only has a 6.3-inch touch screen. Still, that system does have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Volkswagen's own Car-Net App-Connect smartphone-syncing features. Relatedly, while the infotainment system does include navigation, the navigation system is a bit sluggish.

Not as Reliable

J.D. Power gives the 2016 Volkswagen Passat a below-average reliability score of 2.5 out of five. They base this, primarily, on some past recalls.
