Overview2016 TOYOTA RAV4

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 has the reputation of being an all-around decent version of a small crossover SUV. It may not be the leader in any particular category, but it makes the scoreboard in all of them. For the 2016 model, Toyota enhanced the styling of the exterior, giving it a more modern, streamlined look, particularly up front. With the 2016 model, Toyota also introduced a new trim option: the sportier SE. All the modern enhancements, however, can't change RAV4's essential claim to fame as a well-rounded family vehicle.

Spacious and Comfortable

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 boasts a spacious interior with plenty of room for passengers and cargo alike. The seating is also comfortable and supportive, with particularly ergonomic front seats. What's more, the vehicle's smooth handling and responsive chassis makes for a comfortable ride.

In crash tests, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 scores high, receiving the top safety score in five of six Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests and being named a Top Safety Pick+. It also received the top overall safety score of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a five-star score as well on the side crash test and a four-star score on frontal and rollover tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera and the options of rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree parking camera, rear and front parking sensors, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection and forward collision warning.

If there's one factor for which the 2016 RAV4 rises above the competition, it's likely reliability. Capitalizing on the Toyota brand's reputation for building sturdy, stable, and reliable vehicles with a long service life, the 2016 RAV4 is no exception.

What You See Is What You Get

There is no option available to upgrade the engine in the 2016 RAV4 or to switch from the automatic to a manual transmission, so if you don't like what it comes with standard, you may want to look for a comparable model.

It's not that the RAV4 isn't fuel efficient. It's just not as fuel efficient as other vehicles in its class. Still, from this 176 horsepower-capable vehicle you can expect to achieve 22-23 mpg in town and 29 -30 mpg on the highway. Both RAV4s get better mileage on the highway than in the city, but between the front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions, the front-wheel drive RAV4 gets better mileage in the city and the all-wheel drive RAV4 gets better mileage on the highway. For those seeking a more fuel-efficient RAV4, however, 2016 heralded a new hybrid RAV4 model.

Off Off-road

When it comes to off-road driving, there may be better choices of crossover than the RAV4. Power is not really its strong suit compared to the turbocharged engines in other vehicles in its class, and its handling could be seen as somewhat dull to frequent off-road drivers while its towing capacity is more comparable to that of other cars than other SUVs. For the 2016 RAV4, Toyota also removed the rear-mounted spare tire.
