Overview2016 TOYOTA 4RUNNER

One of the few remaining body-on-frame SUVs and one of the only bearing Toyota's trademark reliability, longevity and capability, the 4Runner is built to take a beating and keep on trucking. Whether off-road or on the highway, the 4Runner pushes through obstacles and gets the job done, thanks in part to a powerful 270-horsepower V-6 engine and advanced spring and suspension settings. The 2016 Toyota 4Runner comes in a choice of six different trims: Limited, SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Pro, Trail and Trail Premium.

Split Personality

While the Toyota 4Runner can be your dependable family vehicle on the weekdays, by the weekend, it can be your rugged getaway ride. The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is built to meet the diverse demands of an active family with a full life that balances both work and play. For the most die-hard off-roaders, Toyota offers a TRD Pro Series 4Runner equipped with custom Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, Nitto Terra Grappler tires with extra skid plates and aluminum wheels. In the meantime, for conveniently loading and unloading the vehicle, be it with off-roading gear or your weekly groceries, the 2016 4Runner offers a powered rear liftgate window.

Handling and Maneuverability

Despite some nuances to its particular style of handling and maneuverability (see additional considerations below), the 2016 4Runner handles and maneuvers better than most SUVs. In particular, its narrow body allows it to take curves and corners better than full-size SUVs and nearly as well as most car-based SUVs. The 4Runner's engine allows it to accelerate with ease, and its five-speed automatic transmission ensures optimal gear selection on even the steepest grades.

Room to Spare

Not only does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner offer plenty of space for people and cargo alike, but it also makes that space adaptable to your needs. That includes an optional third-row seat. Normally, the vehicle can seat up to five comfortably, but with the 50/50-split third-row seat available on the Limited and SR5 models, that capacity can increase to seven.

A Distinctive Ride

Many other vehicles in the same class as the Toyota 4Runner handle like midsized sedans. Not so much the 4Runner, though, which handles more like a truck. Similarly, the ride feels more like riding in a truck than in a sedan; while this is fine for some, others may find it a bit too rugged for everyday comfort. In addition, the brake pedal can feel somewhat soft, at least at first. After persistent periods of increased pressure to compensate for this "soft" feeling, the brakes can start to grab.

A Rowdy Ride

In this era of car-based SUVs designed to purr like kittens, the 4Runner can have difficulty competing. Not that it sounds like a bull in a china shop, but it does have more vibration and noise than compact and crossover SUVs.

Fuel Economy

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner offers less-than-ideal fuel economy, with EPA estimates ranging from 17 mpg in the city to 22 mpg on the highway for an average of 19 mpg combined. The fuel economy number drops one (for highway performance, specifically) when you go from the rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive model.
