Ram, or Ram Trucks, is currently an automaker that is part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobile brand as of 2010. Ram was originally a model name for trucks under Dodge. Vehicles under the Ram lineup include the Ram 1500, the Ram HD 2500 and 3500 and the Ram ProMaster cargo van. The Ram 1500 truck especially is one of the most popular trucks in America. 2019 marks the fifth generation of Ram Trucks.
Towing and Hauling CapacityRam trucks have always displayed top hauling and towing capacities compared to most rivals. The 2019 Ram 1500 features a base V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and an available V8 engine that produces 395 horsepower. The latter engine is the better choice for towing, and it can tow up to 12,750 pounds when properly equipped. The Ram HD trucks also offer superior towing ability with both diesel and gas engine choices. The Ram 3500 can tow up to 35,100 pounds when properly equipped, which is best in its class.
Luxurious InteriorThe cabin quality of the 2019 Ram trucks is one of its strongest features. The interior is detailed and lined with premium materials, which easily rivals luxury SUV interiors. The cabins are extremely spacious and also well-insulated from road noise. Cargo space depends on the bed size with 6-feet and 4-inch or 5-feet and 7-inch bed lengths available. Additional cargo space can be found in storage compartments embedded in the sidewalls of the truck bed.
Comfortable RideNeither light-duty or heavy-duty trucks are often known for their supremely comfortable rides, but the Ram trucks are an exception. The Ram 1500 especially boasts an incredible ride quality that is both smooth and stable. Even corners and rough pavement feel surprisingly composed. The Ram HD trucks run a little rougher but compared to other HD trucks, they are remarkably refined.
ReliabilityRam reliability is one of the few sticking points, as Consumer Reports has ranked them fairly low compared to other brands in previous years. However, J.D. Power and Associates gave the 2019 Ram 1500 a four out of five score, which is considered above-average reliability. Ram trucks are covered with a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a three-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty.
Fuel EconomyIn particular, the fuel economy for the Ram gas engines is average to below average for the segment. The 2500 HD gets an average of 15 mpg combined, and the 3500 manages 12 mpg combined. The Ram 1500 gets about 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway with the gas V6. The V8 Ram 1500 gets 15 mpg city and 22 mpg on the highway. The gas V8 also requires midgrade gas versus its rivals that take regular, which makes for higher fuel costs overall.
Safety and Crash RatingsThe 2019 Ram 1500 comes with a number of standard safety features, including a rearview camera, traction control, and several airbags. However, crash ratings for the Ram 1500 have been fairly low in previous years.
