Overview2016 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS

For those looking for a midsize luxury sedan at an agreeable price, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an appealing choice. Although with most vehicles in its class, time seems to pass quickly with every new model coming out having an overshadowing effect, the E-Class remains very much relevant. Its styling combined with high-quality Mercedes engineering and various bells and whistles make the E-Class a viable option for fans of luxury automobiles.

NOTEWORTHY FEATURES

Choice of Style

The E-Class offers an entire ecosystem of models with four different types. You can choose between the classic mid-size sedan, convertible, coupe or wagon. For the 2016 iteration of the E-Class, the wide range of body styles are equally stylish and come with a variety of engines to choose from.

Power, Performance and Fuel Efficiency

Most models in the 2016 E-Class catalog come with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (Mercedes' 4Matic), with the exception of the E550 coupe and convertible, which are rear-wheel drive only. As a point of reference for E-Class engines, the E350 carries a 3.5 liter V6 that produces 302 horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of torque and has a 0-60 performance clocked at six seconds. Meanwhile, the E400 has a turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 that generates 329 horsepower with 354 foot-pounds of torque. In terms of fuel efficiency, both the E350 and the E400 get you 23 mpg overall (20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway).

Safety Technology

E-Class models come with standard anti-lock brakes, front and front-side airbags, front pelvic airbags, stability control and a driver drowsiness monitor. For those going with the convertible, there are automatically deploying rollover hoops for added safety. If you're looking for further security, there's the option of having additional safety measures installed upon request.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Lacks Top-Notch Sport Handling

Though the E-Class offers a comfortable ride, it lacks the intrepid handling of some of its competition. By no means does this make the E-Class a rigid vehicle. If anything, it is the growing number of electronic driving add-ons of the E-Class that make sport-driving a little less enjoyable than it potentially could be.

It's Pricey

E-Class models are generally more expensive than other entries in their class. The extra amenities add to the cost, and depending on whether or not you are looking for these specific features, the E-Class may put itself in a price bracket that is outside your intended outlay.

Safety Issues

From August 2015 through November 2019, eight recalls were issued for the 2016 E-Class. They cover problems with the engine and engine cooling, steering, air bags, roof-mounted spoiler and accuracy of the communication system that gives the vehicle's location. You will need to verify that any of these that apply to the car you choose have been resolved.
