Overview2015 JEEP RENEGADE

The 2015 model year marks the debut of the Jeep Renegade as a compact and more user-friendly option to the Wrangler. The Renegade sports the iconic seven-slot Jeep grille and has plenty of off-road clout. However, it is also more fuel-efficient, offers more safety features and rides more comfortably than the Wrangler. Explore the attractive and practical Jeep Renegade.

Spacious and Quality Cabin

The Renegade has room for five passengers and, despite its compact size, has an interior that is more spacious than it might look. In this, the Renegade is helped considerably by its boxy shape, which yields good legroom in both the front and rear. With the rear seat in place, the cargo room is a healthy 18.5 cubic feet. With the rear seat folded down, that can be improved to over 50 cubic feet. Cabin materials in the Renegade are also playfully detailed and of a nice quality.

Comfortable Ride and Sharp Handling

The Renegade may look somewhat like a miniature Wrangler, but it handles nothing like its larger Jeep sibling. Sharp and agile handling allows the Renegade to take turns like a champ with little to no body roll. Even though the ride in the Renegade is a bit firmer than other small crossovers, it still has an overall smoothness over rough roads.

Trailhawk Off-Road Trim

For those who want the smooth ride and sharp handling of the Renegade versus the Wrangler but also want some off-road ability, the Trailhawk trim stands out as the one to get. The Renegade Trailhawk is trail-rated with some serious off-road ability in the form of extra equipment, higher ground clearance and a terrain-select system that includes an option for rock crawling.

Base Model Standard Features

The base model of the Renegade is a bit light on standard features. It lacks air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity and only offers an AM/FM radio with USB function. The base 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine gives the better power-to-fuel-efficiency ratio versus the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but you also can't get an automatic transmission with the smaller engine. Four-wheel-drive is an option on all Renegade models except for the Trailhawk where it's standard.

Fuel Economy

Even though the Renegade's fuel economy is better than many of its other Jeep siblings, it does fall somewhat short when compared to some of its rivals in the same category. The 1.4-liter engine gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined with or without four-wheel-drive. The bigger 2.4-liter engine gets 25 mpg combined with front-wheel-drive and 24 mpg combined with 4WD.

Towing and Power

The smaller Renegade engine makes 160 horsepower and can only be paired with a manual transmission. This engine is not recommended for towing. The larger Renegade engine makes 180 horsepower and can be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Choosing the larger engine with the 4WD option allows the Renegade to tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.
