The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is a midsize sedan with a sleek profile and plenty of interior passenger space. Its standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine offers an optimal balance of power and fuel efficiency, and there is an option to upgrade to a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The Malibu is available in L, LS, LT and Premier trim levels, and the LT is further divided into the 1LT and 2LT subtrims. The standalone Hybrid trim level is equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control but is otherwise equivalent to the 1LT trim level. All 2016 Chevrolet Malibu models are equipped with front-wheel drive.

Driver and Passenger Comfort

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is equipped with adjustable front seats and a redesigned rear seat that offers generous legroom. The base L trim offers keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a split-folding rear seat. The LS trim adds automatic headlights while the 1LT and Hybrid models add LED daytime running lights, heated mirrors, ambient interior lighting, an eight-setting power driver seat with power lumbar adjuster, and rear climate vents. The Hybrid and the Premier feature dual-zone automatic climate control. The Premier trim rounds out the feature set with remote ignition, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory settings, a six-setting power passenger seat with lumbar adjuster and a heated steering wheel.

Technology Integration

The entry-level L trim offers Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker audio system. The LS introduces some great tech features, including 4G LTE connectivity with mobile Wi-Fi, a rearview camera, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a seven-inch touchscreen that includes Android and Apple smartphone app integration. The LT1 and Hybrid trims add satellite radio while the Premier offers wireless charging, a 120-volt power socket, two additional USB charging ports, an 8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

Performance and Handling

The 2LT trim level introduces several upgrades that result in increased power, improved acceleration and better fuel economy. Compared to other trim levels, the 2LT offers a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips and a larger 15.8-gallon fuel tank. Models that are equipped with the 1.5-liter engine are EPA-rated at 31 mpg combined, which is due to a slight performance boost resulting from a stop-start system that triggers an automatic engine shut-off upon stopping. The Malibu Hybrid is capable of 0-60 acceleration in an impressive 7.5 seconds, and its combined EPA estimate of 46 mpg makes this model one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available.

Base Trim Provisioning

The base L trim is less well provisioned than comparable models. For example, its standard package does not offer the full range of available app integration, information and communication options.

Standard 1.5-Liter Engine

The standard 1.5-liter engine can seem sluggish and is slow to accelerate, but the 2.0-liter engine fully compensates for its less-powerful counterpart.

Trunk Capacity

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu's 15.8 cubic feet of trunk space is average for this vehicle type. In the Hybrid, the battery pack reduces trunk space to 11.6 cubic feet.
