The 2013 to 2018 used Volkswagen Passats are the quintessential family sedan built with comfort, cargo space, and fuel economy in mind. The early American-built Passats offer you the choice of three different engines, including a diesel engine that yields around 43 mpg on the highway. The 2.5-liter engines in the 2013 base models yield a combined 25 to 35 mpg.
Engine PerformanceIn 2014, Volkswagen added a new turbo 1.8-liter gas engine optional along with the diesel carryover. The V6 engines in the base models were still considered to be reliable. The Passat was revamped in 2016, adding two more engines, three transmissions, the front wheel, and the new Sporty R-Line trim. The 4-cylinder turbo became standard in 2017, but the V6 was still available. In 2018, Volkswagen refreshed the Passat again with a new 2-liter engine base and GT performance version.
Interior QualityEven the earlier versions of the used Volkswagen Passats were providing received top safety scores and providing motorists with above-average cabin space. A Fender stereo was available as an option through 2016 until VW upgraded the multimedia system and active safety features. The next year, AppleCar play, Android, and forward-collision warning were added to this five-seat family sedan.
European-Style RefinementYou can expect to have a quiet, refined experience anytime you are traveling around in a used Volkswagen Passat. The cushy, comfortable interior helps make the ride all the more enjoyable. The trunk is large and easily loaded, while the backseat was designed to be roomier than the average mid-size sedan.
Modest AccelerationYou may find the acceleration, throttle response, and transmission to be a bit lacking in comparison to other sedans. This is true for all of the Volkswagen Passat models. The sluggish shifting from the transmission may hinder vehicle performance and make the ride feel like a crawl.
Limited TouchscreenYou may also notice that the touchscreen in the recent Passat models seems to be a tad bit smaller than the ones offered by other manufacturers. Additionally, in the earlier SEL models, the larger touchscreen may respond slowly. So you either get a smaller screen on the base SE models or a larger screen on the SEL trim that may lag more than the others. If speedy responsiveness is important to you, this could be a pitfall.
Conservative StyleThere's no mistaking a used Volkswagen Passat for a sporty luxury coupe, but that sense of humility backed by reliable performance is precisely what appeals to many motorists. What the used Volkswagen lacks in style, it more than makes up for in substance. The used Passat may not have the strongest throttle response, but it does offer far more value with its superior fuel efficiency.
