For the urban dweller in need of something comfortable, versatile, fun to drive and capable of doing some light-duty off-roading or towing, it fills the bill perfectly.     Strong Performance, High Fuel Economy

    Thanks to its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, the Escape stands out as one of the quickest small crossovers in its price range. In fact, in Edmunds performance testing, this optional engine accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in seven seconds flat. Additionally, the Escape gets impressive fuel economy, as none of the engine types drop below 23 mpg combined no matter if they're outfitted with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

    Comfortable Seating, High-Quality Cabin

    With the Escape, passengers are treated to one of the better overall cabin areas that the compact crossover segment has to offer. This space is highlighted by high-quality interior materials, well-shaped and generously padded seats, and upscale standard items such as a rearview camera, USB connectivity, and effective voice controls.

    Nimble Handling

    Adding to the list of impressive attributes on the Escape is its agile steering and sharp reflexes, making it one of the better all-around athletes in its class. Many compact crossovers have a tendency to feel tall and stiff from behind the wheel, however the Escape feels more akin to sporty hatchback.

    ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

    Infotainment, Base Control Layout

    One of the few pain points on the Ford Escape is the layout of the vehicle's infotainment system and base controls. The controls themselves are oddly arranged in twin banks that come together to form a V-shaped pattern. For example, one has to reach down low in order to find the climate control panel, and the standard audio interface can be frustrating with its small display.

    Passenger Space

    Compared to competitors such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Escape doesn't quite offer the level of roominess for passengers. For instance, the reclining backseat doesn't go as far back when stacked against its rivals.

    Interior Storage Cubbies

    Another minor drawback on the Escape is the general lack of storage space available for personal items. The limited number of storage cubbies will force your inner pack rat to be a little more economical, though it's worth noting that the overall cargo capacity in the Escape measures a competitive 34.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats.
