Ram 2500: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide

Last updated August 4, 2026

Ram 2500

The Ram 2500 is a full-size heavy-duty pickup built for serious towing and hauling. It is known for combining work-truck strength with a relatively comfortable ride and cabins that range from basic to luxurious.

The 2500 has long covered a broad range of jobs, from commercial work to long-distance towing and off-road use. Since 2014, its coil-spring rear suspension has helped give it a smoother unloaded ride without abandoning its heavy-duty mission. Over time, richer interiors, stronger towing hardware and more advanced cabin technology have made the upper trims feel less like bare work trucks.

Strengths

  • Its heavy-duty frame and towing hardware are built around demanding trailer and hauling work.
  • The coil-spring rear suspension gives it a smoother unloaded ride than many work-focused heavy-duty trucks.
  • Gas and diesel versions serve different needs, and the 2026 diesel produces 1,075 lb-ft of torque.
  • The lineup stretches from basic commercial trucks to richly finished long-distance tow vehicles.
  • Dedicated off-road trims give buyers factory-built choices for rougher terrain.
  • Upper trims pair heavy-duty capability with large screens and premium cabin features.

Who it's for

It fits someone who regularly pulls a large trailer, carries heavy loads or needs a durable jobsite truck, but does not want to give up everyday comfort. It also suits long-distance towing buyers and off-road shoppers who want a more specialized factory-built truck.

Ram 2500 lineup

Pick the Tradesman when a straightforward work truck matters most, while Big Horn and the closely related Lone Star add a more everyday-friendly presentation. Laramie is the step toward a richer cabin, Limited Longhorn adds a western-themed luxury identity, and Limited sits at the formal luxury end of the range. Power Wagon is the long-running dedicated off-road model, while Rebel has offered a less specialized off-road alternative since 2023. For 2026, Warlock adds another off-road-focused choice and Black Express emphasizes sporty, dark-themed styling.

Ram 2500 generations

From 2011 to 2026, the 2500 spans two generations. The current 5th Generation arrived for 2019, following the 4th Generation (2010–2018).

5th Generation (2019–Present)

The 2019 redesign brought a stronger frame, a new body and cabin, a quieter ride, and a more modern interior. A major 2025 refresh updated the styling, safety features, screens, diesel engine, and diesel transmission without starting a new generation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ram 2500 a heavy-duty truck?

Yes. The Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup built for substantial towing and hauling. Its range covers basic jobsite trucks, comfortable long-distance tow vehicles and specialized off-road models.

Is the Ram 2500 a pickup or an SUV?

It is a pickup truck. Cab, bed and seating layouts vary across used examples, but the Ram 2500 is not offered as an SUV or another body style.

Is the Ram 2500 gas or diesel?

Both. Newer Ram 2500s use either a 6.4-liter gas V8 or a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel. The diesel was substantially revised during the 2025 update and paired with a new eight-speed automatic.

Does the Ram 2500 come as a hybrid?

No. The Ram 2500 lineup uses gas and diesel engines rather than a hybrid powertrain.

Why does the Ram 2500 ride more smoothly than many work-focused heavy-duty trucks?

Its rear coil springs help smooth the ride when the bed is empty. Every Ram 2500 has used this five-link coil-spring rear suspension since the major 2014 chassis update.

How different are older and newer Ram 2500 generations?

The fourth-generation truck ran through 2018, while the redesigned fifth generation began in 2019. The newer truck brought a stronger frame, a quieter and more modern cabin, revised ride tuning and an eight-speed automatic with its standard gas V8.

How many people does a Ram 2500 seat?

Recent Ram 2500s seat three to six people, depending on the cab and front-seat layout. Used trucks may have a front bench or separate front seats, so check the exact configuration.

Who is the Ram 2500 a good fit for?

It fits buyers who regularly tow, haul or need a jobsite-ready pickup but still value cabin comfort. The lineup also serves long-distance trailer users and buyers who need factory-installed off-road hardware.

“After buying the truck I learn that the tires cannot be rotated unless the tire is removed from the wheel and remounted. The Alcoa wheels are only finished on one side making it less than desirable to rotate (how ridiculous is this?). I did not know this before purchasing the truck... had I known I would NOT have bought a Dually!!! This single issue really pisses me off... will never buy a dually again.”
