Land Rover Overview

Land Rover got its start shortly after WWII when British automaker Rover developed a simple but tough offroader based loosely on the original Jeep. That vehicle grew into a legend, known for its ability to go practically anywhere. The company added luxury to the mix in 1970, when it launched one of the world’s first high-end SUVs, the Range Rover. Now owned by India-based Tata Motors, Land Rover produces a series of four-wheel-drive SUVs, ranging from the compact Evoque to the full-size Range Rover. In 2020, it brought its rugged Defender model back to America after a nearly 25-year absence.

Luxury Details
The 2019 Discovery Sport is one of Land Rover's bestselling models due to its luxury feel and fast engine for an SUV. Featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a combined 25 mpg fuel economy, standard models come equipped with a full package of features, like a Meridian audio system, all-wheel drive and a touch-screen infotainment system.

Affordable Luxury
Those seeking a midrange-priced SUV with premium features won't be disappointed as the Discovery's SE base model comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine providing 237 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. This is plenty of power for anyone who craves an SUV that comes with a little more punch in the engine. Those seeking an upgrade can find a more powerful engine in the HSE and HSE Luxury trim models, which hit 286 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

Special Features
The SE's convenience package includes a hands-free liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror and proximity entry. The Land Rover also features one of the only third-row-seat SUVs in its class. Other packages, like the SE Vision Assist package, give fog lights and LED daytime running lights. Extra options include display navigation, and in the HSE model, fixed panoramic roof and full-leather upholstery.

Additional Considerations

Price
With so much good auto technology and upgrades to technology on the market today, it's a given that buyers want to expect a seamless system. The Discovery's infotainment can be laggy at best, with complicated controls that might befuddle some. A more responsive system is needed to really set the Discovery apart from the competition.

Road Noise
The Discovery is a heavy car, so it's expected that the ride may be a bit rough for some people. Suspension can feel hard, and road noise can be a bit much for those drivers who expect a quieter ride. However, the Discovery Sport makes up for this thanks to its ground clearance and suspension with some awesome off-road handling, with settings for snow, mud, sand, gravel and more.

No Diesel or Hybrid Options
Some buyers may miss the option for a diesel or hybrid model in the Discovery Sport as this option was built into some previous models. Luckily, the 2020 model now features a semi-hybrid option, which is a good value for fuel economy.
