Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Discovery Sport delivers much of the off-road prowess and premium style of the midsize Discovery model in a compact package. But don’t mistake “compact” for cramped, as the smaller Disco still boasts one of the roomiest cabins in its class. It also benefits from Land Rover’s patented Terrain Response system, which offers four different off-road drive modes. Owners give the British crossover high marks for its restrained good looks, comfortable interior, and nimble handling. On the downside, the biggest complaints come from the Discovery Sport’s sluggish standard four-cylinder engine and somewhat pricey running costs, which aren’t helped by its lackluster fuel economy.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Model Lineup

The Discovery Sport is a compact luxury crossover SUV that replaced Land Rover’s outgoing LR2 model in 2015. The Discovery Sport seats five passengers in its standard configuration or up to seven with the available third row. It slots between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and the midsize Discovery in the British automaker’s sport-ute lineup.

Land Rover has offered the Discovery Sport in a variety of trims over the years. From 2015 through 2018, buyers could choose from three versions: the entry-level SE, the mid-tier HSE, and the range-topping HSE Lux (rechristened the HSE Luxury in 2018). In 2019, the one-year-only Landmark Edition joined the lineup, offering unique styling elements inside and out. In 2020, a stripped-down Base trim was added, and the remaining trim names were revised to S, SE, and HSE. The following year, both the Base and HSE trims were dropped, leaving just the S and SE.

All versions of the Discovery Sport provide a generous level of standard equipment, including parking sensors, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and a center-mounted infotainment touchscreen, which was upgraded from 8.0- to 10.0-inches in 2020. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration was first offered that same year and become standard one year later (in 2021). While many active safety features, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning, are optional on the Discovery Sport, Land Rover did make forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist standard in 2020, followed by a standard surround-view camera in 2021. Other notable options include navigation, a panoramic sunroof, and automated parking.

Under the hood, most Discovery Sport examples utilize a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with about 240 horsepower. A higher-output version (with 286 hp) was also available from 2018 through 2020 on higher trim levels. Both versions send power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. No hybrid or electric variants have been made available.

It is a perfect combination of luxury and sport. Best of both worlds. Very technologically advanced, yet simple in design and easy to understand all the functions (of the technology). Although it is a high-end vehicle brand, I believe it is well worth the money. I have not had the vehicle very long, but I anticipate a long life-span given the high quality of the product.

Several problems that I am frustrated with because they have not repaired: supposed to have an update for the gas level in the computer. It says I am empty 4.5 gallons before I am really empty. Only fills up to 14 gallons. -Noise like a backfire in the back at low speeds overtime you drive it - driver door rubber falling down - Navigation has a SD card read error -Traffic says all sorts of $ and code when there is a traffic issue

Love the vehicle overall. 3 minor issues wish was different: - rear tailgate could open higher to prevent hitting head - transmission upward shift leads to surge while accelerating - Sirius radio displays are inconsistent and every once and a while the whole radio disappears for short spells.

I love the styling - interior and exterior. It is great that the rear of the car does not slop back like most cars in the category do, which allow greater storage and headroom. The finishes are supreme. I feel that the car is overall to large for the category it is in. It is difficult to maneuver in city traffic and park. It is more cumbersome then other vehicles in the same category and the gas mileage is dreadful. Also, the engine is clunky at times.

I wish the cruise control would hold the speed on a downhill slope. It can increase speed as much as 10mph over the set speed.

Still don't like the accelerator feature. Should be an opt in and not opt out option. Gas pedal kind of touchy. Acceleration needs to be smoother. Push down on pedal and turbo kicks in and car blasts! Back up sensor too touchy, always turn it off because it alarms when I am not close to any objects. Other than those issues, I really love the vehicle. It is a significant improvement over the LR2 that I owned. Also suggestion on logo. I think the Land Rover logo brand should be more prominent on the front of the vehicle and the Discovery logo should have less emphasis. Love this vehicle. It is a great combination of style and comfort. The interior is quite roomy and a major step forward compared to the LR-2. The only feature that I do not care for is the accelerator control that makes it feel like the car stalls when sitting at a light. This has got to go. It should stay in the off position and the driver should be able to "opt-in" and not "opt-out" as it is currently configured. My ONLY dislike. Other than that this car is a gem!

We researched about a dozen vehicles, test drove six or seven, chose the LR Disco Sport, and haven't regretted that choice one bit. While long-term dependability is yet to be determined, our first four months of ownership have been very satisfying!

The auto start-stop feature should not be defaulted on by the system every time the vehicle is restarted if the driver has previously turned it off. The Auto start-stop feature should also be defaulted off by the system while towing. The vision assist package camera view quick access control needs a software/programming refinement to include all the available camera views from the quick access dash button. The most utilized camera view selections for parking (in the mirrors) can only be accessed through a slow touch screen control which entails multiple pop-up touch screen windows.
