As the title suggests, throughout every step of the process I was pleasantly surprised that the experience I received was exactly how they advertise, or better.
I was able to upload my vehicles information, get an appraisal, set up the trade-in, find a new vehicle, set up financing, delivery, and all the paperwork in about 20 minutes.
Seems entirely implausible, I know, but it's the truth.
The ONLY headache was due to my state's (PA) insurance requirements and my insurance company's policies (Progressive). PA requires the new vehicle be insured at the time of purchase, and Carvana has to provide documentation of this to the state for registration purposes, or they cannot complete things in their end. It's sort of a catch 22.
They need to have (all on one sheet) the new VIN, policy number, NAIC number, policy effective date (which must extend for a minimum of 45 days beyond the date of sale), and the buyers name (which has to be the same name that is on the new car documentation). The problem was that Progressive will not issue a policy ID card for future policies. For example, I had already set it up so my old car would come off and the new one go onto my policy on the day of delivery, but there's no document that contains all the information required by PA.
I spoke with a very helpful woman at Carvana who took all time needed to help me figure it out. We ended up calling Progressive on a three way call so she could speak directly to Progressive on my behalf. As it turns out, there's no such document that Progressive can provide that will satisfy the state's requirements, so I had to add the new car to my policy effectively immediately so I could get the ID card with all the information PA requires. I was a bit annoyed that I had to insure a vehicle I didn't own and had never even seen, and the Carvana woman was also upset that I would have to pay extra money for this. She even tried to figure something out where that cost could be absorbed elsewhere, but there was nothing to be done.
I was/am surprised this hasn't been smoothed out by now though. I'm obviously not the first person from PA, who uses Progressive, to buy a vehicle from Carvana, so what the heck?
To be clear, this was not a problem caused by Carvana or Progressive, it's just an outdated Pennsylvania law that has yet to catch up with the current state of the world.
To be honest, it's not at all surprising considering Pennsylvania still has state owned, controlled and operated liquor stores. The ONLY place you can by alcohol in PA is at a state store. Only recently
have they allowed some grocery stores to sell
beer and wine.
Aside from that administrative hiccup, everything went way more smoothly than I assumed it would. After all, Carvana's claims seem to be a bit hard to believe. "Buy a car in 40 minutes". "Why spend 4 hours at dealer when you can spend less than an hour from the comfort of your own home?"
Although, that first claim wasn't exactly true. It took me about 20 minutes to complete the whole process.
Oh, one last thing I think could be helpful to others. As I said earlier, I did the financing through Carvana as well, which was as smooth and easy as everything else was, buuuuut I have less than ideal credit. Actually, it's pretty bad. I didn't even consider getting a new car for many years because of it, but I saw something on a website that said Carvana does a soft inquiry (not sure if that's the proper term) where your credit score isn't dinged having your credit ran without an accompanying new account opened. That's kind of a BS thing to do anyway and I don't know how they've been able to get away with doing that to people's credit for many years. "Oh, you tried to open an account but your credit wasn't good enough, so now we're going to punish you by dropping your credit score even further."
So yeah, I got financed through Carvana without any problems at all. Obviously, my interest rate is less than ideal (or more than ideal? Idk). My interest rate is a good bit higher than a typical car loan, but I'm high risk to them so I can't really complain too much. If I didn't like it, I didn't have to accept.
Sorry this is such a long review but I wanted it to be as helpful as possible. And yes, I would absolutely do business with them again.
Oh man, I almost forgot one of the most important aspects of this. The vehicle I bought was EXACTLY what I expected. Better actually. I'm sure you've seen the high resolution, 360 degree continuous images they have for all the cars. There isn't a scratch, ding, dent, or anything else on or in the vehicle that I wasn't aware of prior to buying it. There really aren't any at all, but they highlighted a few they consider noteworthy and showed them in the pictures. They are the little yellow triangle icons with an exclamation mark in the middle. They show close ups and descriptions of whatever the blemish is.
The point is, the car was exactly as I expected it to be. It was delivered on time (exactly on time) by a very friendly and pleasant man who was professional, courteous and moved with alacrity. I had to physically sign a few papers but the entire experience took less than 30 minutes, including him dealing my trade in vehicle.
They allot an hour for you to go over the entire vehicle with a fine tooth comb, take it for a test drive, or whatever else. I didn't need all that time though. One look and I was confident there were no surprises with the vehicle, and there weren't.
Okay, now I'm done. Hope you all have as good an experience as I did.
