Ford Edge

In 2007, Ford expanded its sport-ute lineup with the Edge, a handsome crossover that has since been a staple for American families seeking a comfortable daily driver. Owners appreciate it for its robust engines, ample cargo space, and available tech features. However, some have expressed concerns over the years about minor reliability issues. Lackluster fuel economy is another sore spot. But overall, most find the Edge’s balance of practicality, style, and performance to be a winning combination.

Lackluster fuel economy is another sore spot. But overall, most find the Edge’s balance of practicality, style, and performance to be a winning combination.

Ford Edge Model Lineup

The Ford Edge is a midsize crossover SUV positioned between the compact Escape and the full-size Explorer in the manufacturer's lineup. The five-seater shares a platform and some components with the more luxurious Lincoln MKX, which was renamed the Nautilus in 2019. Its current (second) generation debuted in 2015, boasting a more refined interior, improved fuel efficiency, and a bolder exterior design. Properly equipped, the Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Ford offers the Edge in a range of trims, including the base SE, the mid-range SEL, the performance-themed Sport and ST, and the upscale Limited and Titanium. The SE offers essential features, while the SEL adds some additional conveniences, such as dual-zone automatic climate control and a power-adjustable driver's seat. The top-of-the-line Limited and Titanium trims include even nicer amenities, such as leather upholstery and advanced infotainment systems. The ST, introduced in 2019 (replacing the Sport), distinguishes itself with a more powerful engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and unique styling elements.

Examples from the Edge’s first generation (2007-2014) come with either a standard 3.7-liter V6 with 305 horsepower or an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (dubbed EcoBoost) with 240 hp. With the launch of the second-gen Edge in 2015, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost became the standard mill, now producing 245 hp, while the V6, now with 280 hp, became optional. Both engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and can be equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive. A 2019 update increased the 2.0-liter EcoBoost’s output to 250 hp and paired it with a new eight-speed automatic. That year also saw the addition of the performance-oriented ST, boasting a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 335 hp and standard all-wheel drive. It replaced the outgoing Sport, which used a similar engine with 315 hp.

With the launch of the Edge's second generation in 2015, Ford updated its infotainment system to the SYNC 3 platform, which offers significant improvements over the previous version (MyFord Touch). It includes an 8-inch touchscreen, which got standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration in 2019, and it was further upgraded to a 12-inch touchscreen in 2021. The second-gen Edge also gained numerous advanced safety features. Most were optional until Ford added its Co-Pilot360 safety package as standard equipment for all trims in 2019. This suite includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, a rearview camera, and automatic high-beam headlights. Adaptive cruise control is available as part of the optional Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package.

For used car shoppers, we recommend 2019 and newer examples of the Edge. These models offer the comprehensive Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite as standard, an updated SYNC 3 infotainment system with full smartphone integration, and an eight-speed automatic transmission for better performance and fuel efficiency. The SEL and Titanium trims strike a good balance between value and features, but those seeking a sportier experience should opt for the ST version, which offers a more powerful engine and sport-tuned suspension.

Purchase experience was great. Have never driven a Ford before. Am very disappointed in my new Edge, doesn''t seem to be any easier to get in and out of than my Traverse. Also do NOT like how awkward it is to close the door. This is probably my biggest dislike.

No need for 140 mph on gauge. Hard to read speed at low speeds, 50 or 60 mph should be at top. A digital display for speed would be a good feature. No mute button for radio. Should have more buttons or dials for radio and temp control, touch screen requires eyes off the road. When sun hits touch screen, vision is blurred due to finger prints. The last delayed pass of the windshield wiper is not needed, on dirty days it just smears the window requiring additional cleanings.

If the standard editions came with touchscreens I feel the car would sell better, even if Ford had to take a cut and still sell it at the price point it sells it at now. Just make other options a bit more pricier. I would have been all for having to pay for other options such as SAT radio, myTouch Ford and Navigation if a touchscreen came standard on all models of the Ford Edge.

I like my new Ford Edge. I wished it was a little more wider to truly fit 3 people in the back seat. Also the cup holders are not right for the back seat. Please review the Chrysler Pacifica way of cupholders they had it right.

As most vehicle manufacturers market heavily to women, why don't they provide for a purse? I don't need a cavernous console. I don't drive leaning on the armrests, but I do need to reach my purse occasionally. Make the console smaller and leave a flat area for a purse.
