Audi R8

The Audi R8 is a two-seat, mid-engine supercar sold as a coupe or Spyder convertible. It is known for pairing race-car-inspired balance and a high-revving V10 with Audi polish and unusual everyday usability.

The R8 has always brought Audi’s racing influence to a road car without making it needlessly difficult to live with. Early cars began with a V8 before the V10 became the defining engine and eventually the focus of the second generation. Across both generations, its core character stayed consistent: mid-engine balance, dramatic performance, a clean driver-focused cabin, and more day-to-day usability than many exotic rivals.

Strengths

  • Its mid-engine layout gives the R8 the balanced, planted feel expected of a serious performance car.
  • The high-revving V10 delivers the sound and character that came to define the R8.
  • Its cabin is clean and centered on the driver rather than crowded with unnecessary controls.
  • It is easier to use day to day than many exotic cars with similar performance.
  • The Coupe and open-top Spyder deliver the same basic character in two distinct forms.

Who it's for

The R8 suits someone who wants the speed, sound, and sense of occasion of a supercar but still values a straightforward cabin and reasonable day-to-day manners. The Coupe is the more focused fit, while the Spyder is for the driver who values open-air drama as much as outright performance.

Audi R8 lineup

The regular V10 models are the straightforward heart of the R8 family, while V10 Plus and the later V10 Performance versions serve as the stronger, more focused step up. Pick the Spyder versions when open-air driving matters more than the Coupe’s slightly sharper focus. Rear-wheel-drive versions offer a more traditional, driver-led feel, while quattro models use all-wheel drive for added traction. GT models sit at the top as limited-production, lighter and more track-focused farewells rather than everyday lineup staples.

Audi R8 generations

From 2009 to 2023, the R8 spans two generations. The current 2nd Generation — Type 4S arrived for 2017, following the 1st Generation — Type 42 (2008–2015).

2nd Generation — Type 4S (2017–2023)

The second-generation R8 uses a lighter aluminum-and-carbon structure, a 5.2-liter V10, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Its cabin centers on a digital instrument display, while the 2020 refresh sharpened the styling and later years brought rear-wheel-drive versions into the regular lineup.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Audi R8 a coupe or a convertible?

It came both ways. The R8 Coupe has a fixed roof, while the R8 Spyder uses a power-operated soft top. Both are two-seat, mid-engine sports cars, but the Coupe is more focused and the Spyder puts more emphasis on open-air sound and drama.

Is the Audi R8 a hybrid or an electric car?

No. Every R8 covered here is gasoline-powered. First-generation cars used either a 4.2-liter V8 or a 5.2-liter V10, while the second-generation U.S. lineup centered on the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10.

Does the Audi R8 have all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive?

Both layouts exist, depending on the version and era. Most earlier R8s used Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. The limited V10 RWS introduced rear-wheel drive, regular rear-drive V10 models followed in later years, and the final GT was also rear-wheel drive.

What makes the Audi R8 easier to live with than many exotic cars?

Its appeal is supercar performance with familiar Audi polish. The cabin is clean and driver-focused, and many versions have heated power seats, automatic climate control, parking sensors, navigation, and smartphone integration. It is still a low two-seater with limited practicality.

Who is the Audi R8 a good fit for?

It suits someone who wants a high-revving engine, mid-engine balance, and dramatic styling without giving up a polished cabin. The Coupe favors a more enclosed, focused experience; the Spyder suits drivers who care more about roof-down sound and occasion.

How many generations of the Audi R8 are there?

There are two U.S. generations. The first-generation Type 42 ran through 2015 and offered V8 and V10 models. The second-generation Type 4S arrived for 2017, used V10 power in the U.S., received a facelift for 2020, and ended after 2023.

Is the Audi R8 still in production?

No. The 2023 R8 was the final U.S. model year. Audi marked the end with the limited GT, a lighter and more track-focused rear-wheel-drive coupe with a 602-hp V10 and specialized traction settings.

“Audi has a strong reputation for being reliable and safe with new technology/design that someone seeking to stand out in the crowd definitely delivers.”

“This vehicle is for shorter people. Anyone who's 6 ft. tall probably would be uncomfortable. The limited seat position is my only criticism of the car.”

“It is an awesome car but Audi is absolutely terrible in regard to service after sale...I will not buy another Audi because of their lack of customer care.”

2022 Audi R8 Spyder Quattro 5.2L

“Definitely a great car! The performance is light years ahead of the mark 1 Audi R8, and it shows when put up against the competition. For instance, it just won Motor Trend's "World's Greatest Drag Race 6" against the competition. Everything you want from a Huracan as a driver, minus the hurdles for factory warranty and repairs.”
