Audi Q5

Since its 2009 debut, the Audi Q5 has made a name for itself as a versatile and luxurious compact crossover with a keen balance of style, comfort, and performance. Owners give it high marks for its well-appointed interior, which boasts user-friendly tech and an array of advanced safety features. The Q5 is also known for its agile handling, refined ride, and varied powertrain options, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid versions. However, some critics point out that competitors tend to offer more cargo space and that maintenance costs can be higher than average. But overall, the Q5 remains a popular choice for those seeking an upscale, family-friendly vehicle with a reputation for German engineering excellence.

Audi Q5 Model Lineup

The Q5 is a compact luxury crossover SUV with room for up to five passengers. In Audi's lineup, it sits between the smaller Q3 and the larger Q7 sport-utes, and it shares a platform and some components with the Porsche Macan, which is built by Audi’s sister company within the Volkswagen Group. The Q5 is also available in a coupe-like body style called the Q5 Sportback as well as a high-performance variant called the SQ5; both are reviewed separately. Its most recent (second) generation launched in 2018, offering a lighter chassis, updated styling, and a more upscale interior. Properly equipped, the Q5 can tow up to 4,400 pounds.

Audi offers the Q5 in a few different trims, including the Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The entry-level Premium comes relatively well-equipped with features, such as heated front seats and a power liftgate. The Premium Plus typically adds more upscale amenities such as a panoramic sunroof and advanced safety features, while the top-of-the-line Prestige further enhances the luxury experience with items such as ventilated front seats and an upgraded audio system.

With the 2018 launch of the second-generation Q5, Audi updated its standard powertrain to a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (known as the 45 TFSI), paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. In 2020, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant joined the lineup. Dubbed the 55 TFSI e, it combines the turbo four-cylinder with a 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor for 362 hp (total) and an estimated 20 miles of electric-only range. Available Q5 powertrains prior to 2018 include an earlier version of the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with 211 hp, a 3.2-liter V6 with 270 hp, and a 3.0-liter V6 TDI turbodiesel with 240 hp. They utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and also come standard with all-wheel drive.

Audi updated the Q5’s standard infotainment system in 2018 from a 6.5- to a 7-inch display and made an even larger 8.3-inch available on higher trims or as an option. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration also became standard that year. For the 2021 model year, the system was further improved to a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen. The Q5’s advanced safety features have evolved similarly. Notable features such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring have long been available as options, and in 2018, the automaker added standard forward collision mitigation and optional lane-keeping assist, among other items.

Considering the Q5’s evolution over the years, we recommend that used car buyers seek out 2018 or newer examples to benefit from that generation’s upgraded technology, additional safety features, and enhanced performance. The Premium Plus trim offers an attractive balance of value and luxury amenities while still providing access to many of the model’s advanced driver-assist features.

Steering is boring. No feel. My 06 x5 4.4 with 85k miles feels much tighter

One of my biggest complaints about my new vehicle now that I have been driving it for a few months, is the cellular connection/availability. The vehicle is programmed with outdated 3G technology when 4G is the new standard.
