Audi A6: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide

Last updated August 4, 2026

Audi A6

The Audi A6 is a midsize luxury car sold as a sedan and a wagon. It is known for combining quiet highway comfort, strong acceleration, all-weather confidence, and a technology-focused cabin.

Across generations, the A6 has balanced business-class comfort with the responsive feel of a sportier sedan. Technology has remained central to its identity, from earlier navigation upgrades to the screen-heavy cabins of newer models. The wagon extends the same formula with more cargo flexibility, and the raised A6 allroad has served shoppers who want extra versatility without moving to a conventional SUV.

Strengths

  • The A6 is built around quiet, composed highway travel without feeling dull when the road turns.
  • All-wheel drive is a defining part of newer U.S. versions and adds confidence in wet or wintry conditions.
  • Strong V6 acceleration has been a recurring part of the lineup, including both 2026 body styles.
  • The cabin has consistently emphasized technology, with newer generations using digital instruments and multiple screens.
  • The A6 allroad provides useful wagon cargo space along with a raised ride height and adaptive air suspension.
  • Recent models seat five and offer roughly 37 inches of rear legroom, giving adults usable space in back.

Who it's for

The A6 fits someone who wants a polished daily driver for commuting, road trips, and year-round travel. The sedan suits buyers who prefer a traditional luxury car, while the wagon and A6 allroad make more sense for those who need flexible cargo space but do not want an SUV.

Audi A6 lineup

Premium is generally the entry point, while Premium Plus is the step up for shoppers seeking more comfort and driver-assistance equipment. Prestige sits at the top with the fullest luxury and technology treatment. On 2019-2025 sedans, the 45 badge identifies the lower-powered turbo four-cylinder models, while 55 marks the stronger V6 versions. The A6 allroad pairs the V6 with a raised wagon body, adaptive air suspension, and extra cargo flexibility, usually in Premium Plus or Prestige form. For 2026, compare the body style as carefully as the trim because the sedan was redesigned while the allroad remained on the previous architecture.

Audi A6 generations

From 2009 to 2026, the A6 spans four generations. The current 9th Generation Sedan / Carryover 2nd-Generation Allroad arrived for 2026, following the 5th Generation — C8 (2019-2025).

Frequently asked questions

Is the Audi A6 an SUV?

No. The A6 is a sedan, while the A6 allroad is a raised wagon. The allroad offers extra cargo flexibility and a higher, adjustable ride without using a conventional SUV body.

Does the Audi A6 come as a hybrid?

Some recent A6 allroads use a mild-hybrid V6, which adds electrical assistance to the gas engine. The latest A6 lineup is still classified as gas-powered, and there is no separate full-hybrid trim in the supplied lineup.

Does every Audi A6 have all-wheel drive?

No, not every used A6 does. Most newer U.S. examples use quattro, Audi’s name for all-wheel drive, and the latest lineup is AWD. Some older entry models, including certain 3.2 and 2.0T sedans, used front-wheel drive.

What is the Audi A6 known for?

The A6 is known for quiet highway comfort, strong acceleration, a technology-focused cabin, and confident all-weather traction on AWD versions. It blends a comfortable luxury-car feel with more responsive handling than a softly tuned cruiser.

Who is the Audi A6 a good fit for?

It suits drivers who want a comfortable, polished luxury car that still feels responsive. The sedan fits commuting and highway travel, while the allroad makes more sense for shoppers who need wagon cargo space but do not want a conventional SUV.

What are the main Audi A6 generations to know when shopping used?

The main U.S. eras here are 2009–2011, the redesigned 2012–2018 generation, the screen-heavy 2019–2025 sedan, and the redesigned sedan beginning in 2026. The allroad returned for 2020 and remained on the previous architecture when the sedan changed generations.

“Drives beautifully. Smooth, powerful, and quiet. Very comfortable. Quality of materials and workmanship seems top-notch. However, too much technology on the car. Controls, menus and infotainment system are confusing and difficult to use. Interaction with smartphone ("Apple Car Play") is a nightmare. Storage for the driver, especially in center console, is ridiculously limited.”
