Scion xB

The Scion xB is a compact everyday hatchback designed as an urban utility vehicle, with a boxy shape that makes it easy to park while creating useful passenger and cargo room. It is known for practicality, adult-friendly rear seating, and simple controls rather than luxury or sporty handling.

The xB consistently paired a small footprint with an upright, space-efficient cabin and a look that stood apart from ordinary small cars. Its second and final generation kept that basic formula from 2008 through 2015. Styling, seating comfort, audio, and connectivity improved over time, but practical space remained the main reason to buy one.

Strengths

  • Its upright shape creates generous passenger and cargo space for a compact hatchback.
  • The rear seat has enough room to be useful for adult passengers, not just children.
  • Its small footprint makes it well suited to tight streets and parking spaces.
  • The controls are straightforward, while later models added useful basics such as Bluetooth, USB connectivity, a touchscreen, and a backup camera.
  • Its distinctive boxy styling gives it more personality than a typical small hatchback.

Who it's for

The xB fits city and suburban drivers who want something easy to park without giving up a useful back seat or flexible space for groceries and everyday gear. It especially suits shoppers who care more about simple operation, practical packaging, and distinctive styling than luxury or sharp handling.

Scion xB lineup

The regular Base xB is the heart of the lineup, with the model’s roomy box-shaped cabin and straightforward approach. Pick it when practicality matters more than special-edition styling or rarity. Scion also released a series of limited-production editions over the years, usually distinguished by factory styling, trim, lighting, technology, or suspension details. The 686 Parklan Edition arrived late in 2015 as the final special xB, making it the one to consider when limited-edition status is the main draw.

Scion xB generations

From 2009 to 2015, the xB spans 1 generation. The current 2nd Generation arrived for 2008.

2nd Generation (2008–2015)

This xB has a boxy hatchback body, a roomy cabin, and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a manual or automatic transmission. It received broad exterior and interior updates for 2011, followed by another styling and cabin update for 2013.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Scion xB an SUV or a hatchback?

The Scion xB is a compact four-door hatchback that Scion marketed as an urban utility vehicle. Its tall, boxy shape provides SUV-like space, but its small footprint makes it easier to park than a larger utility vehicle.

What is the Scion xB known for?

The xB is known for fitting a roomy cabin and flexible cargo area into a compact, boxy body. Its main strengths are adult-friendly rear seating, straightforward controls, useful storage, and an unusual look rather than luxury or sharp handling.

How many people does the Scion xB seat?

The Scion xB seats five. The latest model has 38 inches of rear legroom, and the tall, square cabin helps make the back seat more comfortable for adults than the exterior size might suggest.

Is the Scion xB practical for carrying cargo?

Yes. The xB has a 60/40-split rear seat that reclines and folds flat, so passenger and cargo space can be rearranged as needed. Later base models also have underfloor cargo storage and a tray beneath the rear seat.

Is the Scion xB a hybrid?

No. The second-generation Scion xB is a gas-powered vehicle with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The latest version makes 158 horsepower.

Does the Scion xB have all-wheel drive?

No. The latest Scion xB lineup uses front-wheel drive, which sends power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is not part of that lineup.

Does the Scion xB have a manual or automatic transmission?

Regular second-generation xBs were sold with either a manual or automatic transmission in later years. Some special editions were automatic-only, including the Release Series 10.0.

Which Scion xB generation ran through the end of production?

The second-generation xB ran from 2008 through 2015. The 2015 model was the final xB sold in the U.S., so every later used example belongs to that same generation even though styling and equipment changed during the run.

“Overall my Scion XB is excellent; but it would be nice to make a few changes to the interior on future models. One would be to have more than one speed for the intermittent wipers. Also better overhead lighting in the cargo area that turns on when the doors or the rear hatch is opened. Also there is a need for more power outlets (direct from battery not controlled by the key) in the rear cargo area.”
