Nissan Frontier: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide
Last updated August 13, 2026

The Nissan Frontier is a midsize pickup known for straightforward truck capability in a size that is easier to manage than a full-size truck. Recent models use a standard V6 and offer four-wheel drive for rough job sites and trails.
The Frontier has long followed a simple formula: sturdy truck construction, useful hauling and towing ability, and an approachable size for everyday driving. Earlier versions ranged from basic four-cylinder work trucks to V6 off-road and comfort trims. Since 2020, a 310-horsepower V6 and nine-speed automatic have defined the powertrain, while the 2022 redesign brought the cabin, safety features, and technology up to date without changing the truck’s straightforward character.
Strengths
- Its body-on-frame construction gives it the sturdy foundation expected of a traditional pickup.
- Since 2020, every Frontier has used a strong 310-horsepower V6 with a nine-speed automatic.
- A properly configured 2026 Frontier is rated to tow up to 7,150 pounds.
- Its manageable size works well for commuting while leaving room for hauling gear and tackling weekend projects.
- The PRO-4X adds meaningful off-road hardware rather than relying on rugged-looking trim alone.
- The 2022 redesign added a much more modern cabin and stronger standard safety technology while keeping simple controls.
Who it's for
The Frontier fits commuters, do-it-yourselfers, tradespeople, and outdoor users who need genuine pickup capability without moving up to a full-size truck. It makes particular sense for someone who regularly carries gear, tows, or visits rough roads but still wants a truck that feels manageable in daily use.
Nissan Frontier lineup
Pick the S for the Frontier’s basic work-truck experience, or step up to the SV for a more everyday-oriented middle ground. Since 2022, the PRO-X has paired the PRO models’ rugged look with rear-wheel drive, making it the style-focused choice rather than the dedicated trail version. The PRO-4X is the genuine off-road trim, combining four-wheel drive with specialized trail hardware. The SL has appeared in different periods as the comfort-focused model, while the recent PRO-4X R special edition takes the off-road theme beyond the regular PRO-4X.
Nissan Frontier generations
From 2009 to 2026, the Frontier spans two generations. The current 3rd Generation arrived for 2022, following the 2nd Generation — D40 (2005–2021).
3rd Generation (2022–Present)
The 2022 redesign brought tougher, squared-off styling, a much more modern cabin, stronger standard safety technology, and a revised trim range. It kept the straightforward 310-hp V6 and 9-speed automatic, then received a light styling and equipment refresh for 2025.

2nd Generation — D40 (2005–2021)
The D40 was the Frontier's long-running body-on-frame generation, with a major front-end update for 2009. It kept four-cylinder and V6 choices for most of its run before every 2020 model switched to a 310-hp V6 and 9-speed automatic.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Nissan Frontier only sold as a pickup?
Yes. The Frontier is a midsize pickup. Depending on the year and version, used examples have a smaller King Cab or a four-door Crew Cab, with seating for four or five and different bed arrangements.
Does the Nissan Frontier come as a hybrid?
No. The Frontier is a gas-powered truck, not a hybrid. Newer models use a 3.8-liter V6, while older Frontiers were sold with either a four-cylinder engine or a 4.0-liter V6, depending on the trim and year.
Do all newer Nissan Frontiers have a V6?
Yes. Every Frontier since 2020 has a 310-hp 3.8-liter V6 and a 9-speed automatic. Earlier used Frontiers may instead have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 4.0-liter V6, along with different transmission choices.
Is the Nissan Frontier rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive?
Both types exist. The Frontier has been sold in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive forms. Four-wheel drive is the better fit for loose trails or rough job sites, while rear-wheel drive suits shoppers who do not need that added traction.
Can the Nissan Frontier tow a trailer?
Yes. The Frontier is built for real truck work. In the latest lineup, maximum towing ratings run from 6,270 to 7,150 pounds depending on the version, so the exact truck's cab, drivetrain, equipment, and rating should be checked before towing.
What are the main Nissan Frontier generations to know about?
The big used-truck divide is the 2022 redesign. Models through 2021 use the long-running second-generation body. The 2020-2021 trucks kept that older shape but gained the newer V6 and 9-speed automatic. Models from 2022 onward have the newer exterior, cabin, technology, and trim structure.
Who is the Nissan Frontier a good fit for?
The Frontier fits someone who wants a manageable everyday pickup that still has a separate truck frame, useful towing and hauling ability, and four-wheel-drive options. Crew Cab versions suit passengers better, while King Cab versions favor bed space and basic truck duty.
Nissan Frontier Reviews
What owners are saying about the Nissan Frontier.
“I utilize all the features my Nissan Frontier offers roof rack bed loading towing AW drive. but the very most important feature is DEPENDABILITY. and this is my third Nissan Frontier and I trust it's RELIABILITY.”
“Nissan Frontier is a solid truck. It can't haul massive loads, but it isn't a slouch either. Mechanically set, the layout makes sense. Keep finding hidden compartments as well.”
“I can not believe that Nissan would sell a pick up without automatic headlights that you can set and they turn on and off. Also, lights that don't shine during the day automatically. This is a very important safety feature to me.”
“Check the seat adjustment and leg room for comfort. I'm 6'3" and legroom is a little short compared to the competition.”
“Overall, it is a nice vehicle, but I hate the width of the front seats in this new vehicle. They are terrible and too narrow compared to my last new Frontier.”
