Hyundai Accent: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide

Last updated August 13, 2026

Hyundai Accent

The Hyundai Accent is a small, front-wheel-drive economy car sold as a sedan and, in earlier generations, a hatchback. It is known for good fuel economy, simple controls, and useful everyday features without the size of a larger car.

The Accent has long focused on straightforward, affordable-feeling transportation rather than flash or complexity. Successive redesigns brought roomier cabins, better efficiency, and more useful technology while keeping it compact and easy to drive. Later models continued that formula as simple sedans for commuting, and 2022 was the final U.S. model year.

Strengths

  • Its compact size and simple controls make it easy to use in everyday city driving.
  • Fuel economy is a central strength, and automatic 2022 models were rated at up to 33 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
  • The cabin has repeatedly been made roomier through redesigns while the car has remained small and manageable.
  • Recent trims provide a clear progression from basic transportation to better phone integration, comfort, and safety equipment.
  • Sedan and hatchback versions across its history give used-car shoppers a choice between a traditional trunk and more flexible cargo space.

Who it's for

The Accent suits commuters, first-time drivers, and small-car shoppers who mainly need uncomplicated transportation for city driving and daily errands. It makes the most sense for someone who values fuel economy and easy operation more than strong power or a large back seat.

Hyundai Accent lineup

For 2018-2022 sedans, pick the SE for the basic Accent experience, step up to the SEL for better phone-friendly technology, and choose the Limited for more comfort and safety features. In 2016-2017, SE identified the simpler sedan and hatchback models, while the Sport sat above them as the more upscale hatchback. On older third-generation cars, GS generally marked the straightforward hatchback, GLS the more comfort-focused sedan, and SE the sportier hatchback. Trim meanings changed between generations, so the model year matters when comparing used Accents.

Hyundai Accent generations

From 2009 to 2022, the Accent spans three generations. The current 5th Generation arrived for 2018, following the 4th Generation — RB (2012–2017).

5th Generation (2018–2022)

The fifth-generation U.S. Accent was a sedan only. It brought a slightly larger, stiffer body, more passenger room, updated powertrains, and a stronger technology and safety baseline; 2022 was its final U.S. model year.

2022

The three-trim sedan lineup and 1.6-liter engine carried over. An engine immobilizer was added to SE and SEL during production, and this was the Accent’s final U.S. model year.

2021

The three-trim sedan lineup carried over without significant changes.

2020

A revised 1.6-liter engine and new automatic transmission improved fuel economy, with little else changing.

2019

Small equipment updates included revised grille trim on SE, fog lights and chrome window trim on SEL, and LED headlights on Limited.

2018New generation

The redesigned sedan gained a larger and stiffer body, more passenger room, an updated 1.6-liter powertrain, a standard rearview camera, and stronger technology and safety features.

4th Generation — RB (2012–2017)

This redesign introduced new sedan and five-door hatchback bodies, a roomier cabin, a direct-injection 1.6-liter engine, and six-speed transmissions. It also added a stronger standard safety package, followed by a light styling refresh for 2015.

2015Mid-cycle update

A light refresh revised the grille, headlights, taillights, wheels, and interior fabrics. The SE hatchback was renamed Sport.

2014

Every Accent gained sliding sunvisors, a driver-side blind-spot mirror, and one-touch triple-blink turn signals.

2013

Air conditioning, heated side mirrors, and remote keyless entry became standard across the lineup.

2012New generation

The full redesign brought new sedan and five-door hatchback bodies, a new 1.6-liter engine, six-speed transmissions, a roomier cabin, and more standard safety equipment.

3rd Generation (2006–2011)

In its later years, this generation included sedan and three-door hatchback body styles with a shared engine and transmission family. Changes from 2009 through 2011 centered on fuel economy, equipment, and trim organization rather than a major redesign.

“Has no power whatsoever, you have to floor it to go from a stop, even with the air-conditioning off. Transmission does not shift smoothly either.”

“ABS recall currently live and without a fix - not the best considering I live in CO. It's cute and compact but offers some roominess. Clearance is not good for off roading. Acceleration is okay. Transmission slipped once, which was worrying. I don't like the way it shifts. Overall nice and does the job.”
