Honda CR-V
With a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride, and excellent fuel economy, the Honda CR-V is one of the best compact crossover SUVs on the market. Not surprisingly, it’s also one of Honda’s top-selling models – and has been ever since its introduction over 25 years ago.
With a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride, and excellent fuel economy, the Honda CR-V is one of the best compact crossover SUVs on the market. Not surprisingly, it’s also one of Honda’s top-selling models – and has been ever since its introduction over 25 years ago.
Now in its fifth generation, the CR-V has benefited from numerous changes over the years. One of the most significant came with the 2020 model year, when Honda introduced a new hybrid powertrain. Choosing that option improves the CR-V’s fuel economy from an already strong 30 mpg to a truly impressive 38 mpg in combined driving, according to the EPA.
Another notable under-the-hood upgrade came with the 2017 introduction of Honda’s excellent 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the CR-V. Initially available on the EX and higher trim levels, the new mill boosted power noticeably over the rather sluggish 2.4-liter base powerplant while also earning better gas mileage. It became standard equipment for all trims starting in 2020.
The CR-V boasts one of the roomiest cabins in the compact SUV segment. It offers class-leading luggage space behind the rear seats and is positively cavernous with them folded down. And when in use, the rear seats are among the largest and most comfortable in the class. The small Honda also excels at interior storage, providing lots of useful cubbies and nooks throughout the cabin.
The CR-V may not be a luxury car, but Honda doesn’t skimp on creature comforts, especially at the higher trim levels, which offer niceties such as heated seats, a power liftgate, and LED headlights. Since 2020, all CR-Vs also come equipped with a suite of active safety features (dubbed Honda Sensing), which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
Honda CR-V Model Lineup
The CR-V is a compact crossover SUV that slots between the subcompact HR-V and the midsize Passport in Honda’s sport-ute lineup. The CR-V shares a platform and some mechanical components with the Honda Civic, a compact sedan.
Honda offers the CR-V in a variety of trims, ranging from the base LX to the top-of-the-line Touring. Most are powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine driving the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). All-wheel drive is optional. A hybrid version first became available in 2020.

The gas mileage is much lower than advertised (13 to 16 miles per gallon per tank of gas).

The only thing I've got some reservations about is the USB connection port to connect my phone. Feels a little flimsy.

We are not happy with our new vehicle. The radio reception is bad. The CRV vibrates roughly when at idle. After 2 months we had a rear differential leak and the part needed to be replaced. We are dissatisfied with our purchase.

Hate the way it rides. You can feel every little bump, etc. It does not ride smooth like I assumed it would. Our Forrester rode smoother. When we did the test drive, my husband drove. Mainly it was on a freeway. So I didn't feel any bumps. But now I sure notice them, especially when I drive. We took my old uncle, 90 years old, out for a drive and he made a comment about how rough it rode. Maybe it's because it's an AWD? Whatever, but I sure don't like the car. We probably should have looked around more and did more test driving.
