Ford Mustang MACH-E

Launched in 2021, the Mustang Mach-E is the first Ford built from the ground up as an all-electric vehicle. While it shares a name (and some styling cues) with the company’s iconic pony car, the Mustang Mach-E is more people mover than sports car. And it excels at the task, combining premium family accommodations with the benefits of a battery-electric powertrain, including quick and near-silent operation.

Ford gives Mach-E buyers a variety of electric powertrain options to choose from, starting with the battery pack. It comes in standard and extended-range sizes, with a capacity of either 70- or 91-kWh, respectively. (Note that capacity for 2021 models is lower by 2-3 kWh.)

For maximum range, opt for the extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive. In mid-level California Route 1 trim, that combination achieves an EPA-rated range of 314 miles for the 2022 model year (slightly less for 2021). Adding all-wheel drive drops the range a smidgen, as do the larger 19- and 20-inch wheels that come with the highest trim levels (Premium and GT). With the standard battery, range tops out at 247 miles for versions with rear-wheel drive and 224 miles for those with all-wheel drive (again, slightly less range for 2021 models).

The Mach-E’s battery pack can be charged from 10-80% in about 45 minutes using a 150-kW DC fast charger. At-home charging with a 48-amp, 240-volt Level 2 setup gets the job done in about ten hours.

Both rear- and all-wheel-drive Mach-Es utilize two electric motors (one on each axle). In rear-drive models, the front motor is employed only for power regeneration. But with all-wheel drive (AWD), it also adds twist. As a result, opting for AWD not only helps to get the Mach-E’s power to the pavement, it also increases its overall output – up to a maximum of 480 horses for the sporty GT trim, which can hit 60 mph in under four seconds.

Along with a few of its styling elements, the Mach-E also seems to take some of its ride and handling cues from the traditional Mustang sports coupe. In other words, it’s surprisingly athletic for a midsize crossover. It’s also a bit on the stiff side, especially in sporty GT trim, which adds a sport-tuned suspension.

Inside its spacious cabin, the Mach-E feels more premium than you might expect from a car wearing a Ford badge. A large 15.5-inch central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, signaling the car’s tech-forward nature. It houses numerous premium features, including standard navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Mach-E also boasts standard adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-centering assist.

The California Route 1 trim adds lots of other niceties, including heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a surround-view camera, and Ford’s BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving system. To unlock even more bells and whistles – such as a hands-free liftgate, acoustically insulated front windows, and a high-end Bang & Olufsen audio system – buyers will need to step up to the aptly named Premium trim.

Ford Mustang MACH-E Model Lineup

The Mustang Mach-E is a battery-powered midsize crossover SUV with room for five. It’s the only electric SUV in Ford’s growing EV lineup, which also includes the F-150 Lightning pickup. Despite its name, the Mach-E doesn’t share any components with the company’s other Mustang model, which is a gasoline-powered sports coupe.

Ford offers the Mustang Mach-E in four main trims: the base-level Select, the mid-tier California Route 1, the well-equipped Premium, and the performance-oriented GT. Buyers can choose from either a standard or an extended-range battery pack and either rear- or all-wheel drive. More details on these options follow below.
