Audi TT: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide
Last updated August 13, 2026

The Audi TT is a compact sports car sold as a coupe and convertible, known for distinctive styling, an upscale cabin, all-wheel-drive traction, and easier daily use than a stripped-down weekend toy.
The TT has consistently blended sports-car style with Audi comfort and everyday usefulness. All-wheel drive became standard across the U.S. lineup in 2010, helping make secure traction a core part of its character. The third generation added a driver-focused digital instrument display while keeping the coupe’s useful hatchback layout. Its U.S. run ended after the 2023 model year.
Strengths
- Its distinctive shape and premium cabin give it a personality that stands apart from more conventional sports cars.
- Standard all-wheel drive from 2010 onward provides reassuring traction for year-round driving.
- The coupe’s hatchback layout makes it more useful for everyday cargo than many small sports cars.
- The regular TT, TTS, and TT RS form clear steps from everyday sportiness to more serious performance.
- Third-generation cars put key driving and navigation information in a digital display directly in front of the driver.
Who it's for
The TT suits someone who wants a small, stylish sports car for commuting, weekend drives, and year-round use. It makes particular sense for buyers who value an upscale cabin and secure all-wheel-drive handling more than the raw, stripped-down feel of a single-purpose sports car.
Audi TT lineup
Pick the regular TT for the lineup’s core blend of style, comfort, and everyday performance. Step up to the TTS for a quicker, more performance-focused version without leaving the TT’s polished character behind. The TT RS sits at the top as the most serious model, distinguished by its turbocharged five-cylinder engine and additional performance hardware. The limited Final Edition was a 2023 farewell model rather than a recurring step in the performance ladder.
Audi TT generations
From 2009 to 2023, the TT spans two generations. The current 3rd Generation — 8S/FV arrived for 2016, following the 2nd Generation — 8J (2008–2015).
3rd Generation — 8S/FV (2016–2023)
The third-generation TT moved to a new platform with a lighter aluminum-and-steel body, sharper styling, and a cabin centered on a digital instrument cluster. The U.S. range included the TT and TTS, with the five-cylinder TT RS returning for 2018.

Frequently asked questions
Was the Audi TT sold as both a coupe and a convertible?
Yes. Used TT lineups included a two-door coupe and a soft-top Roadster, although body-style offerings varied by year and trim. The coupe adds a rear hatch and small back seats, while the Roadster is a two-seater.
Is the Audi TT a hybrid?
No. The U.S. Audi TT models covered here use gas engines. Most have a turbocharged four-cylinder, while certain older regular TTs used a V6 and the TT RS used a turbocharged five-cylinder.
Does every Audi TT have all-wheel drive?
Almost every U.S. TT from 2010 onward has quattro all-wheel drive. Some 2009 regular TTs were front-wheel drive, so check the listing or vehicle itself when shopping that early year.
Is the Audi TT practical enough to use every day?
Yes, especially as a coupe. Its all-wheel drive, upscale cabin, and rear hatch make it easier to live with than a stripped-down sports car. The rear seats are very tight, though, so they are better for occasional use or extra storage.
Is the Audi TT discontinued in the U.S.?
Yes. The 2023 model was the final U.S. Audi TT. The TT RS ended here one model year earlier, while the regular TT and TTS continued through the final year.
How can I tell the second- and third-generation Audi TT apart?
The major break is the 2016 redesign. Second-generation U.S. cars run through 2015. Third-generation cars span 2016 through 2023 and have sharper styling, a lighter body, and a digital instrument display that also handles navigation and other cabin functions.
What engines were offered in the Audi TT family?
The regular TT mainly used turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Some older regular models had a 3.2-liter V6. The TTS used a stronger turbo four, while the TT RS stood apart with a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder.
