About the 2026 BMW 5 Series

8th generation (G60), third model year after the all-new 2024 redesign.

BMW positions the 5 Series as its midsize luxury sedan for drivers who want more room, comfort, and upscale tech than a 3 Series without stepping into the larger, more formal 7 Series. The core appeal is a mix of long-distance comfort, modern cabin technology, clean sedan styling, and multiple powertrain choices ranging from an efficient turbo four-cylinder to a strong inline-six and a plug-in hybrid. It is the brand’s do-everything luxury sport sedan for commuting, business travel, and road trips.

The 530i remains the everyday four-cylinder model, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the 375-hp 540i xDrive supplies smoother, stronger six-cylinder performance. The 483-hp 550e xDrive pairs a six-cylinder engine with plug-in power and up to 33 miles of electric driving. All versions have a curved digital display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Harman Kardon audio, and a moonroof.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The 550e xDrive has standard 11-kW Level 2 AC charging for 2026. BMW introduced this faster setup during 2025 production, so some late-build 2025 examples may also have it.
Styling
LED headlights move from optional to standard across the lineup. There is no broader exterior redesign.

How the 2027 BMW 5 Series compares

The 2027 BMW 5 Series is a carryover with no major changes. Its four-trim lineup, engines, styling, technology, and safety equipment remain essentially the same as in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series redesigned?

No. The 2026 5 Series carries over the eighth-generation design introduced for 2024, with no verified changes to the body, chassis, suspension, or cabin layout.

What is the biggest change to the 2026 BMW 5 Series?

The biggest change is standard 11-kW Level 2 AC charging for the 2026 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid. This gives that trim faster AC charging capability than earlier versions without the update.

Does every 2026 BMW 5 Series have LED headlights?

Yes. LED headlights are standard across the 2026 BMW 5 Series lineup; they were optional equipment for the prior model year.

Did the 2026 BMW 530i or 540i get a new engine?

No. The 530i keeps its 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the 540i xDrive keeps its 375-hp turbocharged inline-six. Their eight-speed automatic transmissions also carry over.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series worth choosing over a 2025 model?

The 2026 model is most meaningful for 550e xDrive shoppers who want the standard 11-kW charging setup. Otherwise, the two years are very similar, although the 2026 lineup also makes LED headlights standard.
