About the 2025 Mazda CX-50

1st generation (2023-present), third model year; major powertrain expansion with the first CX-50 Hybrid, not a redesign.

Mazda positions the CX-50 as the more outdoor-minded, rugged-looking alternative to the CX-5: a compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive, useful cargo flexibility, and styling aimed at active lifestyles, but without giving up the brand’s sharper road manners and upscale cabin feel. Its core appeal is everyday comfort and confident handling first, with light-duty adventure capability, road-trip usability, and a more premium feel than many small-SUV rivals.

The 2.5 S Select is the straightforward gas entry, with standard AWD, a 10.25-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and synthetic leather seating. The new Hybrid Preferred combines electronic all-wheel drive with heated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a power liftgate, while the Hybrid Premium adds leather, a panoramic moonroof, and Bose audio. The turbo models remain the stronger-performance side of the range; the Meridian Edition has a more rugged focus, while the Turbo Premium Plus carries the most extensive camera and driver-assistance equipment.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The first CX-50 Hybrid joins the range in Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus trims. It uses a 2.5-liter hybrid system, an automatic transmission, and electronic all-wheel drive. Internal updates to the non-turbo 2.5-liter gas engine improve EPA city, highway, and combined fuel economy by 1 mpg. The previous entry-level 2.5 Turbo trim is dropped, while the other turbo trims continue.
Safety
Every trim gains a rear-seat reminder, a warning that watches for traffic when occupants open a door, and improved automatic emergency braking with better nighttime pedestrian and head-on collision detection. Turbo Premium gains lane-centering and traffic-sign recognition, while Turbo Premium Plus adds front cross-traffic detection, expanded braking assistance, and an enhanced 360-degree camera view.
Tech
A built-in Alexa voice assistant becomes standard throughout the lineup. The 2.5 S Preferred also gains wireless phone charging, and the Turbo Meridian Edition adds power-folding side mirrors with memory.

“The CX 50 is a reliable car from a reliable auto maker that invest in innovative technology. The CX 50 has an excellent interior and exterior look, a perfect size for someone that doesn't want to go too big or too small. Also, its interior design is clean with a minimal amount of buttons. Finally, it comes with a fair amount of safety features.”

“As far as a hybrid suv, the cx50 is an excellent choice in terms of size, safety features, esthetics, and price. There are not many other non-plug ins on the market with this much cargo space at this price point.”
