About the 2023 Ford Escape

4th generation (2020-2026), mid-cycle refresh year

Ford positioned the 2023 Escape as a compact SUV for commuting, city driving, and everyday family use rather than rugged trail driving. Its main strengths were a sliding second row that trades passenger room for cargo space, easy-to-use smartphone integration, and a broad range of gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Compared with the boxier Bronco Sport, the Escape emphasized a smoother, more car-like design and road-focused comfort.

The 2023 lineup spans the comfort-focused Active, the upscale Platinum, and a three-grade ST-Line family with sportier exterior and interior details. Platinum and ST-Line Elite feature a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a surround-view camera, and adaptive cruise control. Full-hybrid versions appear across several grades, while the plug-in hybrid stands as its own trim.

What changed, by category

Styling
Ford redesigned the hood, grille, front bumper, and slimmer LED headlights. The ST-Line grades added sportier details such as a black mesh grille, body-color lower panels, red-stitched seats, and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
Tech
SYNC 4 became standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch digital instrument display also became standard across the lineup, while upper trims received larger screens.
Safety
The core blind-spot monitoring system gained rear cross-traffic braking, which can apply the brakes when the Escape detects a vehicle crossing behind it.

How the 2024 Ford Escape compares

The 2024 Ford Escape is a light lineup-update year, not a redesign. The main change is that Active becomes the entry retail model after Ford ends the consumer Base series; the Active hybrid also leaves the lineup.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2023 Ford Escape a full redesign?

No. The 2023 Escape remains part of the fourth generation introduced for 2020, but it receives a substantial mid-cycle update with a redesigned front end, upgraded screens, and a reorganized trim lineup.

What technology became standard on the 2023 Ford Escape?

Every 2023 Escape gets Ford’s newer SYNC 4 touchscreen system, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an 8-inch digital instrument display. Higher trims use a 13.2-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.

Did the 2023 Ford Escape get new engines?

No. The turbocharged gas, full-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid systems were not fundamentally redesigned for 2023. Ford instead reorganized those powertrains across the revised trim range.

How did the 2023 Ford Escape trim lineup change from 2022?

The 2023 lineup added Base, Active, Platinum, and ST-Line Elite while dropping SEL and Titanium. S continued under the ST-Line name, and SE continued as ST-Line Select.

What safety feature changed on the 2023 Ford Escape?

The 2023 Escape’s blind-spot monitoring gained rear cross-traffic braking. The system can automatically brake when it detects a vehicle crossing behind the Escape while it is backing up.

“It's a good solid vehicle that does its job. The interior is nice, but there are some bells and whistles left to be desired. It's perfect for commuting to/from work with the electric motor so I rarely use gas.”
