2022 BMW 8 Series

The biggest change for the 2022 BMW 8 Series is that the M Sport Package becomes standard on every six-cylinder 840i model. This is a trim and equipment update, not a redesign.

About the 2022 BMW 8 Series

1st generation 8 Series (G14/G15/G16, 2019-2025); 2022 is the last pre-facelift year before the 2023 refresh.

BMW positions the 8 Series as a grand-touring luxury car first and a sharp-edged sports car second. It is the style-led, long-distance member of BMW’s upper-end lineup, offered as a coupe, convertible, or four-door Gran Coupe. The appeal is a mix of strong engines, rich cabin materials, and dramatic design, with the 840i models leaning toward smooth everyday grand touring and the M850i/ALPINA versions adding much stronger performance without giving up the 8 Series’ comfort-focused personality.

The 840i remains the comfort-focused entry point, with a 335-hp six-cylinder engine and coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles. The M850i adds a 523-hp V8 and sharper suspension hardware, while the new 612-hp ALPINA B8 Gran Coupe serves as the more exclusive, comfort-oriented four-door flagship. All-wheel-drive 840i models also feature four-wheel steering for a more planted and agile feel.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The 612-hp ALPINA B8 xDrive Gran Coupe joins the lineup with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, an ALPINA-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The regular 8 Series engines and transmissions carry over.
Styling
The M Sport Package becomes standard on the 840i and 840i xDrive across coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe body styles, giving the six-cylinder models a sportier exterior. Alloy wheels shift from standard to optional on the 840i and 840i xDrive models, including the Gran Coupes.
Tech and cabin equipment
Every 840i and 840i xDrive gains multi-function front seats and Extended Merino leather as standard equipment.
Chassis
The new ALPINA B8 Gran Coupe brings its own suspension and drivetrain tuning, including adaptive dampers, active roll stabilization, four-wheel steering, and a rear limited-slip differential.

“Acceleration and handling are excellent. The car is a lot of fun to drive, and the luxurious interior is fun to be in. The car feels very safe, especially when braking due to traffic stopped in front of me. So far I have owned the car for just a few summer months in the Pacific Northwest where daylight is long and dry. I have not had many opportunities to drive at night or in the rain.”
