About the 2019 MINI Hardtop

3rd generation Hardtop (F56 2-door / F55 4-door), 2019 mid-cycle refresh year.

MINI positioned the Hardtop as the original MINI formula in modern form: a small premium hatch with unmistakable styling, quick steering, and the brand’s signature “go-kart” feel. Its core appeal is city-friendly size, personality, and everyday fun rather than maximum space or a cushy ride. The 4-door gives buyers a little more practicality, while Cooper S and JCW versions layer in more speed without changing the Hardtop’s playful basic mission.

The Cooper remains the everyday version, with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, synthetic leather upholstery, and rear parking sensors. The Oxford adds a panoramic moonroof and heated front seats, while the Cooper S brings a stronger turbo four and selectable drive modes. The 228-hp John Cooper Works sits at the top with a sport-tuned suspension, aerodynamic body pieces, and dedicated sport seats.

How the 2020 MINI Hardtop compares

The biggest change for the 2020 MINI Hardtop is the arrival of the all-electric Cooper SE 2 Door. This is not a redesign, but it is a meaningful update that also brings revised automatic transmissions and more standard safety equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Was the 2019 MINI Hardtop fully redesigned?

No. The 2019 MINI Hardtop received a mid-cycle refresh, so its basic shape, engines, and underlying design carried over while the lighting, badges, and cabin technology were updated.

What is the biggest difference between the 2019 and 2018 MINI Hardtop?

The biggest difference is the 2019 model's design-and-tech refresh. It has revised lighting details and MINI logos, plus a standard 6.5-inch color display and multifunction steering wheel.

Did the 2019 MINI Hardtop get new engines?

No. The 2019 refresh kept the familiar engine lineup: a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder in the Cooper, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Cooper S, and a 228-hp version of the 2.0-liter engine in the John Cooper Works.

Is the 2019 MINI Hardtop worth choosing over a 2018 model?

The 2019 model makes more sense if the refreshed appearance, standard color display, and multifunction steering wheel matter to you. It is not a major mechanical step forward because the engines and basic design carry over.

Was there a 2019 MINI Hardtop Oxford Edition?

Yes. The 2019 Oxford Edition was a better-equipped Cooper offered in two-door and four-door form, with features including a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

“First MINI was great! Fun to drive, more spacious than it appears, gas mileage (key reason for purchase) was awesome, sound system is awesome, basic seat comfort is good, sporty and price was really good!”

“I will never drive another car besides a Mini after having owned one since 2013. I absolutely adore it. Also, you'll be surprised by the interior space. The only thing I warn about is that cargo space is limited. But if you're mostly driving with one or two passengers, dropping the seats down makes the cargo capacity huge. This particular Mini is probably not for you if you have kids and tons of gear.”

“A mini cooper is always a fun drive - it's cute and the perfect size for a solo driver.”
