About the 2019 BMW 5 Series

7th generation (G30), launched for 2017; 2019 is a pre-facelift middle year before the 2021 refresh.

BMW positions the 5 Series as an executive sport sedan that blends long-distance comfort, modern technology, and sharper driving manners than a traditional luxury cruiser. In this generation, the appeal is breadth: the same roomy, quiet midsize sedan can be had as an efficient four-cylinder, a plug-in hybrid for short electric commuting, a smooth turbocharged six-cylinder, or a V8-powered performance model. That wide choice is a key differentiator versus rivals.

The 530i remained the straightforward everyday 5 Series, while the 530e paired the same midsize luxury-sedan format with plug-in electric driving. The 540i brought a smoother, stronger 335-hp turbocharged six-cylinder, and the M550i xDrive topped the range with a 455-hp twin-turbo V8, all-wheel drive, and an adaptive suspension. A 10.2-inch touchscreen with navigation and Apple CarPlay was standard across the range.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The 540d xDrive changed from a diesel powertrain for 2018 to a gas turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder for 2019. The rest of the engine range carried over without a major shake-up.
Styling
Alloy wheels became standard on both 530e plug-in-hybrid trims. Fog lights changed from standard to optional on the 530e, 530i, 540d xDrive, and 540i variants.
Safety
Blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert became standard across the lineup.
Tech
Apple CarPlay became standard across the lineup. Parking assist became standard on the 530e, 530i, 540d xDrive, and 540i variants, while proximity keyless entry changed from standard to optional on those models.

Most engines carried over, but the 540d xDrive changed from diesel power in 2018 to a gas turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder for 2019. The lineup still included four-cylinder gas, plug-in-hybrid, six-cylinder gas, and V8 versions.
