2014 BMW 3 Series

The biggest change for the 2014 BMW 3 Series is a much broader lineup, led by the new 328d diesel, new-generation Sports Wagon, and all-new Gran Turismo hatchback. It is an expansion year rather than a sedan redesign.

About the 2014 BMW 3 Series

6th generation 3 Series family (F30 sedan, F31 Sports Wagon, F34 Gran Turismo); early-cycle year: third year for the sedan, first U.S. year for the Sports Wagon and Gran Turismo, and first year for the 328d diesel.

BMW positions the 3 Series as the benchmark compact luxury driver’s car: quick steering, balanced chassis tuning, strong turbo engines, and an upscale cabin that still works for everyday use. Even as the family expands into diesel, wagon, hatchback-style GT, and hybrid versions, the core pitch stays the same: this is the sporty choice in the segment, with added efficiency or cargo room depending on trim rather than a move toward a softer, comfort-first character.

The 320i serves as the straightforward entry sedan, while the 328i balances stronger turbo-four power with everyday comfort. The 335i brings a 300-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine, and the ActiveHybrid 3 combines hybrid technology with performance-focused power. The Sports Wagon emphasizes cargo flexibility, while the taller Gran Turismo provides extra rear-seat room and a large tailgate.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The 328d and 328d xDrive sedans introduce a 180-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine with 280 lb-ft of torque and an eight-speed automatic. The diesel also powers the AWD 328d Sports Wagon. The 335is is no longer part of the lineup.
Styling
The body-style range expands beyond the familiar sedan with the new-generation Sports Wagon and the new Gran Turismo, a taller hatchback-style 3 Series.
Structural
The U.S. Sports Wagon moves to the newer F31 body. The Gran Turismo introduces a longer-wheelbase layout with a higher seating position, more rear legroom, and a large tailgate cargo area.
Safety
BMW Assist emergency calling and TeleServices become standard on most sedan trims.
Tech
Navigation-equipped sedans, Sports Wagons, and Gran Turismo models move to the newer iDrive 4.2 system with a touchpad controller. A touchscreen monitor also changes from optional to standard across the lineup.

How the 2015 BMW 3 Series compares

The 2015 BMW 3 Series is largely a carryover, with standard proximity keyless entry as its most important update. There is no redesign or lineup-wide powertrain change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest difference between the 2014 and 2013 BMW 3 Series?

The biggest difference is the expanded 2014 lineup. The 328d diesel, new-generation Sports Wagon, and all-new Gran Turismo join the range, while the existing gas sedans receive smaller equipment updates rather than a redesign.

Does the 2014 BMW 3 Series have a diesel model?

Yes. The 2014 lineup introduces the 328d with a 180-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine and 280 lb-ft of torque. It appears as a rear-wheel-drive sedan, an AWD sedan, and an AWD Sports Wagon.

Which 2014 BMW 3 Series body styles were new?

The new-generation Sports Wagon and the all-new Gran Turismo were the major body-style additions for 2014. The wagon focuses on cargo flexibility, while the Gran Turismo uses a taller hatchback body with more rear-seat space and a large tailgate.

Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series sedan redesigned?

No. The regular 2014 sedan keeps the same basic design introduced earlier in the sixth generation. Its changes are mainly added equipment, while the larger news is the arrival of diesel, wagon, and Gran Turismo variants.

Was the BMW 335is offered for 2014?

No. The 335is was dropped from the 3 Series lineup for 2014. The 335i sedan remained, using a 300-hp turbocharged inline-six engine.

“I had a rock hit my window and crack it. This is my third BMW, and this has happened to all of them. I believe the glass is too soft.”

BMBarry M.
2014 BMW 3 Series 328i Sedan

“Love the performance. Diesel has loads of torque. Gas mileage is amazing especially highway. Diesel engines can have sensor exhaust issues, but BMW covers these issues as they arise.”
