Toyota Camry

Since first arriving on our shores in 1983, the Toyota Camry has become an enduring symbol of reliability and comfort in the American automotive landscape. Owners appreciate the practical yet refined midsize sedan for its smooth ride and spacious interior as well as its fuel efficiency and low long-term ownership costs. While the Camry’s rather conservative design may not win over enthusiasts, it has evolved over the years, and recent models feature lots of desirable modern amenities, such as advanced safety tech and user-friendly infotainment. Some may criticize the Camry's driving experience as bland, but its reputation for quality and dependability keeps it at the top of many shopping lists, cementing its status as one of the country’s most popular vehicles.

Toyota Camry Model Lineup

The Camry is a midsize sedan that seats up to five passengers. In Toyota’s sedan lineup, it sits between the compact Corolla and the full-size Avalon, and it is related to the Lexus ES, a more upscale offering from the automaker's luxury division. The Camry’s most recent (eighth) generation debuted in 2018, offering a new platform, revised styling, and updated technology.

The Camry comes in a variety of trims, including the LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. The base LE provides essential features, while the SE offers similar equipment with a firmer suspension and sportier styling accents. The upscale XLE adds leather upholstery and additional technology options for a more luxurious feel, while the XSE combines the XLE's luxury with the SE's sportiness. In recent years, Toyota has also introduced the Nightshade Edition and the performance-oriented TRD (Toyota Racing Development) trim. The Nightshade Edition, based on the SE and XSE trims, adds black exterior accents, while the TRD boasts a more aggressive look, a sport-tuned suspension, and other enhancements.

In its seventh generation (2012-2017), the Camry’s base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 178 horsepower, with an available 3.5-liter V6 making 268 hp. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which routes power to the front wheels. An available hybrid pairs the 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor for a combined output of around 200 hp and employs a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). With the launch of the eighth generation Camry in 2018, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine was upgraded to 203 hp (206 in the XSE trim), while the optional 3.5-liter V6 added 33 ponies for 301 hp total. Additionally, the standard six-speed automatic transmission was replaced with a new eight-speed unit. Also starting in 2018, the available hybrid also got a bump to 208 hp total. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Camry, and since 2020, all-wheel drive has been available as an option with four-cylinder models.

In 2015, the Camry gained a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which was upgraded in 2018 to a 7-inch touchscreen in the LE and SE trims, while the higher trims gained an 8-inch unit. Apple CarPlay integration first appeared in 2019, followed by Android Auto in 2020. Toyota's Safety Sense suite of advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams, became standard on all Camry models starting in 2018.

For used car buyers, we recommend 2018 and newer versions of the Camry, as they offer an updated design, improved powertrains, and additional standard tech and safety features. Those who prioritize fuel efficiency should consider the Camry Hybrid, while drivers seeking a sportier experience will likely find the XSE or TRD trims most appealing.

My Camry doesn't have that quick pick up and go I was used to in my last vehicle. However, I love my gray color, the interior, the sound system, the room, the many cup holders which is great, I usually have a lot of people in my car. Being able to talk w/o an ear piece is great. It's a nice smooth, soft ride.

Bluetooth is horrible. Not sure if because of wind noise or a problem with the system. Road noise is considerably loud, though tolerable. Also, the rear bumper had to be removed due to failure in vehicle construction processes. I didn't notice it until the other day, but the tech who removed my bumper gouged the paint right below my left tail light. Not happy.

Toyota Camry has one of the worst Navigation systems. I had an issue ticket opened up with Toyota and all they came back to tell me was that is how it is designed !.. the navigation system tells you 2 blocks ahead that you have arrived at your destination. To me this is unacceptable, as other maps on your phone give you a very accurate navigation guidance

I buy Toyota cars because of my past experience with them. At one time I was a GM person but that stopped years ago. My success with the Toyota cars will not make me change to other makes.

The trunk lid opening is too short. It is difficult to place large items through the opening despite them fitting within the available space. The armrest is placed too far aft for comfort. Having owned four Camrys prior to 1992 and one Corolla, I am very impressed with the engineering improvements with the 2014 Camry. I chose the 2014 because I do not care for the 2015 Camry front end. It is following the Lexus styling which I do not care for. The short trunk lid is the greatest negative on the Camry for me. I use the trunk a great deal and this was a sacrifice for me to move into a newer vehicle. I also find the digital dash display for mileage and coolant temperature to not be displayed bright enough. I would like a digital display of engine temperature rather than a bar graph. Kudos for the engine balancing and lack of resonance. A smooth, quiet and good handling vehicle with excellent fuel mileage were key factors in my purchase. The color combination with the creme brulee and multitone seat colors caught my eye and were a key factor in selecting the vehicle purchased.

The ride on my new vehicle is a little harsh. The SE Sport edition suspension is too stiff for a car like the Camry which is noted for being a smooth ride. An adjustable suspension system might be an interesting option. The operating manual is too busy. It could be condensed. I really like the car and its reliability and value has proven itself in the other Toyotas I have owned.

Good but a couple of things missing. If not I could have told excellent and I am delighted. Overall I was happy. But regarding the engine and air conditioning, I was not as happy as with other vehicles.

I enjoy my new vehicle. I feel like I really got value for my money and will buy another Toyota again in the future when I am in the market for a new vehicle many years down the road.

So far, so good. I've owned the Camry just 6 weeks. Only a couple of beefs about the interior. 1) I wish I could raise the steering wheel higher. I'm fairly tall and the steering wheel (event at the high tilt position) feels low to me. 2) Also hate the new government-mandated headrests. My previous car was from the 2008 model year (before the new rules on headrests took effect). It was much more comfortable. Really wish I had the option to opt out of the new curved (and uncomfortable) headrests, more to the point, I wish the government would keep its nose out of this kind of thing.

The Eco light is a distraction. I feel like I'm doing something wrong when I accelerate and it goes off, so I end up constantly watching it. It's a waste to have the average fuel economy as a gauge on the dashboard. I would benefit greatly from a remaining mileage indicator. A turning light indicator on the side mirrors would be a nice addition. USB audio always resets when the vehicle is turned off. Why can't it remember the settings? It takes a very long time for the heating system to heat up the interior. A remote garage opener should be a standard option. Rough transmission. Hard to insert ignition key. Sensitive gas cap. Check engine light comes up if not closed properly. Unable to use phone as both, phone and audio source via Bluetooth at the same time. Favorites not copied off the phone into car's memory.
