Toyota Land Cruiser: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a body-on-frame SUV built for serious off-road travel while remaining comfortable and practical for everyday use. It is known for full-time four-wheel drive, durable trail hardware, towing ability, and a long-standing reputation for reaching remote places.

The Land Cruiser has long combined genuine off-road ability with an upscale, everyday-friendly cabin. Older 200 Series models followed a large, V8-powered, often three-row formula, while the U.S. return for 2024 brought a smaller five-seat design with a turbo-hybrid powertrain. Across those changes, the common thread is sturdy construction, full-time four-wheel drive, and hardware meant for travel beyond paved roads.

Strengths

  • Its body-on-frame construction, full-time four-wheel drive, and locking center and rear differentials give recent models hardware meant for demanding trails.
  • It balances serious off-road capability with the comfort and technology needed for ordinary daily driving.
  • The turbo-hybrid powertrain in the current generation delivers strong low-speed pulling power, with 465 pound-feet of torque in 2027.
  • It has useful towing strength, with the 2027 model rated to pull up to 6,000 pounds.
  • The model has a long-established reputation for travel in remote areas, rather than being a road-focused SUV dressed for the trail.

Who it's for

The Land Cruiser best fits someone who genuinely plans to explore rough trails, tow, or travel far from pavement but still wants one SUV that feels comfortable in normal daily use. It also suits buyers who value proven off-road hardware and simple outward visibility more than the lighter, road-focused feel of a typical midsize SUV.

Toyota Land Cruiser lineup

In the recent 250 Series, the 1958 is the heritage-themed choice, while the namesake Land Cruiser is the other continuing grade; both share the same core hybrid and four-wheel-drive hardware. Pick the 1958 when its old-school identity is the main draw, or the Land Cruiser grade when that theme matters less. The 2024-only First Edition was a limited launch model rather than a lasting step in the range. Among older 200 Series models, the regular Land Cruiser was generally one fully equipped model, while the 2020-2021 Heritage Edition added heritage styling and more cargo-focused two-row packaging, with a three-row version joining for 2021.

Toyota Land Cruiser generations

From 2009 to 2027, the Land Cruiser spans two generations. The current 250 Series arrived for 2024, following the 11th Generation — 200 Series/J200 (2008–2021).

The Land Cruiser returned to the U.S. on a new body-on-frame platform with a standard turbocharged hybrid powertrain. Every version has full-time four-wheel drive, locking center and rear differentials, and Toyota’s updated safety suite.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser a hybrid?

Newer ones are. Since its U.S. return for 2024, every 250 Series Land Cruiser has used a 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid with 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The earlier 200 Series instead used a 5.7-liter V8.

Does the Land Cruiser have AWD or 4WD?

It has full-time 4WD, meaning all four wheels receive power during normal driving. Newer 250 Series models also have center and rear locks that help keep power moving when wheels lose grip.

How many people does a Toyota Land Cruiser seat?

It depends on the generation. Newer 250 Series models have two rows and five seats. Many 200 Series Land Cruisers seated eight, while the late Heritage Edition was sold in two-row and three-row forms.

Is the Land Cruiser more like a crossover or a truck-based SUV?

It is a truck-based SUV. Its body sits on a strong boxed frame rather than using the lighter one-piece structure common in road-focused crossovers. That design supports its trail and towing focus.

How much can a newer Land Cruiser tow?

The newer 250 Series Land Cruiser is rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds. That gives it useful capacity for a trailer while retaining its five-seat, trail-focused SUV layout.

Who is the Toyota Land Cruiser a good fit for?

It fits drivers who expect real trail ability and towing strength but still want everyday comfort and modern technology. Its upright shape, full-time 4WD, low-speed trail aids, and sturdy frame matter more than a carlike crossover feel.

Which Land Cruiser generations should a used shopper know about?

The main recent U.S. generations are the 200 Series, sold from 2008 through 2021, and the smaller 250 Series, which returned for 2024 with a hybrid powertrain. There were no U.S. Land Cruiser model years for 2022 or 2023.

“It will go anywhere, fun to drive, stylish and reliable. Fuel mileage is terrible.”

“It is a great vehicle, but it is not very fuel efficient, I do feel that it is very durable and will last a very long time. It does not have the latest tech, but it will probably take you anywhere in the world that you want to go.”

“It is a great car to drive. I like that is an expensive vehicle, but has a low profile. The gas tank could be larger, and the gas mileage is not great, but everything else outshines those two things.”

“If you desire to go off-road, and/or want an incredibly over-engineered/reliable vehicle, the Land Cruiser is the best fit for those objectives.”
