Toyota Highlander LE, XLE, Limited & More

The LE is the straightforward family trim in many Highlander lineups. On newer models it pairs three rows and an eight-seat bench layout with core safety tech, smartphone connectivity, three-zone climate control, and a power liftgate.

In recent years, the XLE brings a more comfortable cabin with heated front seats, SofTex synthetic-leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, second-row sunshades, and a hands-free power liftgate. It is the practical step up from LE.

The XLE is comfort-focused, while the XSE is the sport-styled version. On newer models, XSE brings darker exterior details, firmer suspension tuning, and a more responsive AWD system. It does not turn the Highlander into a true performance SUV.

On newer Highlanders, Limited adds real leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, a digital gauge display, and front and rear parking help. It is the main step from family comfort to a more upscale cabin.

In recent lineups, Platinum adds the top visibility and comfort features: a panoramic glass roof, a head-up display that projects information near the windshield, a 360-degree camera, and a digital rearview mirror.

The XLE is the practical middle choice in recent lineups. It covers popular comfort needs with heated synthetic-leather seats, useful cabin conveniences, and a hands-free liftgate without moving into the richer equipment of Limited or Platinum.

Look first at LE models in recent lineups. They commonly use a second-row bench for seating up to eight, while several higher trims use second-row captain’s chairs and seat seven. Seating layouts vary on older Highlanders, so check the actual vehicle.

On newer Highlanders, Limited and Platinum have both heated and ventilated leather front seats. XLE has heated front seats but not the same ventilation feature. Older trim equipment varies by generation.

In newer lineups, Limited and Platinum use a 12.3-inch touchscreen. XLE and XSE generally use an 8-inch screen, while special versions such as the later Bronze Edition also received the larger display.

Nightshade is an appearance package, not a performance upgrade. Recent Hybrid LE Nightshade and XLE Nightshade models use black wheels and dark exterior trim. XLE Nightshade keeps the XLE’s added comforts, while LE Nightshade stays simpler inside.

The Bronze Edition is a style-focused hybrid sold during part of the fourth generation. It sits above the mainstream Hybrid XLE formula with distinctive trim, a larger touchscreen, a digital rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, and household-style power outlets.

The Limited 25th Edition is a special Highlander Hybrid based on the upscale Limited. It has standard electronic AWD, unique anniversary details, a Portobello leather interior, two 12.3-inch displays, JBL audio, and a 360-degree camera.

Limited Platinum is the earlier name for the most fully equipped Highlander. On third-generation models, it builds on Limited with features such as a panoramic moonroof, a 360-degree camera, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and added parking help.

These names mark sport-themed Highlanders from different eras. Sport appeared on older second-generation models, SE replaced it during that generation and returned in the third, and XSE is the fourth-generation version. Each emphasizes styling and firmer road tuning over added luxury.
