Porsche Taycan

The Taycan, Porsche's first all-electric vehicle, combines remarkable levels of performance, comfort, and utility in a sharp-looking package. It’s a sports car, a daily commuter, and (especially in long-roof Cross Turismo guise) a grocery-getter all rolled into one. Though its range trails the leaders in this segment, it’s still a capable road tripper, thanks to its fast-charging battery pack.

Porsche introduced the Taycan in 2020, and it immediately became one of the best electric cars on the market. It’s also one of the most expensive, with some examples selling for well over six figures.

At the heart of the Taycan is one of two available battery packs, the 79-kWh standard version or the upgraded 93-kWh Performance Battery Plus, which boosts acceleration and range. The latter comes gratis with the highest trim levels (GTS and up).

In base trim, power is delivered to the rear wheels via a single electric motor and a standard two-speed automatic transmission. It's rated at 321 horsepower but can deliver as much as 402 hp in short bursts. That makes it good for sprints to 60 mph in just over five seconds. While that’s plenty fast, higher trims add a second motor and all-wheel drive for even better results.

The Taycan is rated for 200-225 miles of range, depending on the configuration. However, in real-world use, owners report being able to beat those figures easily.

Inside the cabin, the Taycan boasts a luxurious and quiet cabin with lots of available tech. Standard features include heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, wireless charging, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Notably, the latter didn’t appear until 2022. Most of these functions are accessed and controlled through two large, center-mounted touchscreens.

In typical Porsche fashion, the options list borders on exhaustive and quickly drives up the price. Available add-ons include an adaptive air suspension, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, rear-wheel steering, and ceramic-composite brakes. Some desirable driving aids, such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, are also optional.

Porsche Taycan Model Lineup

The Taycan (pronounced tie-KAHN) is an all-electric sedan that seats four. It slots between the slightly larger Panamera and the two-door 911 in Porsche’s passenger car lineup. The Taycan is also available as a wagon, which the manufacturer calls the Cross Turismo. The model shares a platform and some components with the Audi e-tron GT, sold by Porsche’s sister company.

Porsche offers the Taycan in a variety of trims, ranging from the relatively well-equipped base model to the high-performance GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S versions. The base model features a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, while the other variants offer two motors and all-wheel drive.
