Mazda CX-3

One of the first subcompact crossovers to hit the market back in 2016, the Mazda CX-3 set a high bar – one that’s only recently been challenged by competitors. Like most offerings from the Zoom-Zoom automaker, the CX-3 stands out for its fun-to-drive nature as well as the premium feel of its cabin. Owners also appreciate its charming good looks as well as its available safety tech, which includes stuff that’s typically reserved for luxury models, such as adaptive cruise control. Among the Mazda’s minor letdowns is a lack of rear seat room and interior storage. But that’s not too surprising considering the CX-3’s diminutive dimensions.

Mazda CX-3 Model Lineup

Produced from 2016 through 2021, the CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV with seating for up to five people. It’s the smallest model in Mazda’s sport-ute lineup, measuring about a foot shorter than the compact CX-5 and about five inches shorter than the CX-30, which is the model that supplanted the CX-3 after it was discontinued.

Mazda sold the CX-3 in three trims: the entry-level Sport, the mid-tier Touring, and the top-of-the-line Grand Touring. However, note that only the Sport was available in the CX-3’s final two model years (2020-2021). As an economy car, it comes relatively lightly equipped but does offer air conditioning, cruise control, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Bluetooth audio as standard features. The list of available upgrades is pretty long and includes heated front seats, premium audio, and even a head-up display. Most advanced safety tech was reserved for higher trims until 2019, when blind-spot warning became standard across all levels. Adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning followed suit in 2020, which is also the first year for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Under the hood, the CX-3 employs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine making just under 150 horsepower. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, it drives the front wheels unless the model is equipped with optional all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric variants were offered.

Great gas mileage, average of 33 mpg. It has a very small gas tank and poorly placed cup holders. Overall a fun car to drive.

I like most everything about my Mazda except the stupid cup holders. It is either use the center armrest or the cupholder, not both.

Make sure you are ok with:- Ability to get in and out of front seats since center pillar is a little in the way. - Lack of storage space up front for glasses, coins, documentation, etc...- Gas tank is small making range less than industry standard of 300 miles & requires more frequent refueling.

CX-3 was marketed right for us, empty nesters or close to it, didn't need all the cargo space but wanted good fuel economy and a very fun car to drive. Excellent all around safety features and love the adaptive cruise control. Very good overall performance for a 2.0 liter.

I completely recommend this vehicle to others. I haven't had a single issue with anything, driving/appearance since I have owned it.

I love this vehicle. First non-European, non-turbo vehicle I've owned in 20+ years. Smooth drive, excellent acceleration, terrific styling. Very, very happy with it at 3200 miles.....
