Jaguar XJ

The XJ has been an institution of luxury motoring since the 1960s. Across the decades, the elegant sedan has consistently embodied Jaguar’s famous “grace, space, and pace” slogan. The XJ’s fourth and final iteration, which first appeared in 2011 and ran through 2019, thoroughly modernized the big Jag with sleek new sheet metal and powerful engines, while keeping its signature old-world charm intact. Owners most appreciate the XJ’s luxe and roomy cabin and smooth yet agile demeanor on the road. On the downside, some express disappointment with its pricey upkeep, clunky tech interface, and smallish trunk.

Jaguar XJ Model Lineup

The Jaguar XJ is a full-size luxury sedan with room for up to five people. Before being discontinued in 2020, it was the British automaker’s largest sedan, measuring about seven inches longer than their midsize model, the XF. Jaguar built both standard and long-wheelbase versions of the XJ; the latter adds several inches of rear-seat legroom and is known as the XJL.

Jaguar sold the XJ in a wide range of trims, which correspond not only to equipment levels but also to the included powertrain. Since 2013, a 340-horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 has powered the entry-level versions, including the XJ base, the XJ R-Sport, and (since 2014) the XJL Portfolio. Stepping up to the mid-tier XJ Supercharged or the XJL Supercharged upgrades the engine to a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making 470 hp. An even more potent version of that mill (with over 500 hp) is fitted to the top-of-the-line XJs, which were originally known as the XJ Supersport and XJL Supersport before being rebadged XJR in 2014 and finally XJR575 in 2018. All versions since 2013 utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission with either standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric versions were produced.

Inside the cabin, all XJs come handsomely equipped with features and amenities, including soft-close doors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, navigation, and front and rear parking sensors. A blind-spot warning system joined the standard-feature list in 2016, and lane-keeping assist followed in 2018, though for rear-drive versions only. Adaptive cruise control was offered as an option throughout the XJ’s production run; however, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration was only available in its final year (2019).

2014 Jaguar XJ RWD

5.0

I've had trouble with the Stop/start system being rough and on two occasions the car didn't restart immediately. I also feel rearward visibility is poor making backing up a challenge.
