INFINITI FX: Trims, Generations & Buyer's Guide
Last updated August 4, 2026

The INFINITI FX is a midsize luxury SUV known for its coupe-like shape, strong V6 or V8 engines, and responsive road manners. It favors style and an engaging drive over maximum cargo space and family practicality.
The FX has always blended luxury-car comfort with the feel and dramatic shape of a sporty crossover. Its driver-focused cabin, quick responses, and strong engines set it apart from softer luxury SUVs of its time. The second generation ran under the FX name from 2009 through 2013 before becoming the QX70 for 2014.
Strengths
- Its coupe-like profile gives it a distinctive look among conventional luxury SUVs.
- Strong V6 and V8 engines support the FX’s performance-first character.
- Responsive road manners make it feel more engaging than softer luxury SUVs from the same period.
- The cabin puts the emphasis on the driver while still providing seating for five.
- The 2009 redesign brought a lighter, stiffer body and a seven-speed automatic across the lineup.
Who it's for
The FX suits someone who wants the higher seating position and everyday usefulness of an SUV but cares more about style and driving feel than maximum room. It works best for individuals, couples, or smaller households that can live with a tighter back seat and less family-focused packaging.
INFINITI FX lineup
The FX35 is the core V6 model through 2012 and makes sense for shoppers who want the FX’s style and sporty character without stepping up to the V8. For 2013, the FX37 takes its place with a stronger 325-hp V6. The Limited Edition, introduced for 2012, is the more distinctive V6 version, pairing all-wheel drive with darker styling and bundled premium technology. The FX50 is the performance-focused flagship, using a 390-hp V8 for buyers who put stronger acceleration ahead of fuel economy.
INFINITI FX generations
From 2009 to 2013, the FX spans 1 generation. The current 2nd Generation arrived for 2009.
2nd Generation (2009–2013)
The second-generation FX brought a stiffer, lighter body, a roomier footprint, a redesigned interior, and a 7-speed automatic. It launched with stronger V6 and V8 engines, then received refreshed front styling for 2012 before the FX name changed to QX70 after 2013.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of vehicle is the INFINITI FX?
The INFINITI FX is a five-seat luxury SUV with a low, coupe-like shape and a sporty focus. It emphasizes strong acceleration, quick responses, and bold styling more than maximum passenger or cargo space.
Does the INFINITI FX come as a hybrid?
No. The FX models covered here use gasoline engines: a V6 in the FX35 and FX37, or a V8 in the FX50. There was no hybrid trim in the 2009–2013 second-generation lineup.
Is the INFINITI FX the same vehicle as the QX70?
Yes, in practical terms. The second-generation FX ended under that name after 2013 and continued as the QX70 for 2014. The new badge reflected INFINITI’s naming change rather than an all-new vehicle.
Who is the INFINITI FX a good fit for?
The FX suits someone who wants SUV seating and a rear hatch but cares more about styling, acceleration, and responsive handling than maximum family space. Its cabin and road manners feel aimed at the driver.
Is the INFINITI FX a practical family SUV?
It can handle everyday duty for five people, but practicality is not its main strength. The sloping shape and driver-focused design give up some passenger and cargo usefulness compared with boxier midsize SUVs.
What stands out most about the INFINITI FX?
Its standout traits are the dramatic coupe-like body, strong V6 or V8 engines, and more athletic road manners than a traditional comfort-first SUV. It was designed as a performance crossover rather than a maximum-utility vehicle.
Which generation of the INFINITI FX is covered here?
The used FX years covered here belong to the second generation, introduced with a full redesign for 2009. The FX name ran through 2013 before the same model line adopted the QX70 name.
