The GMC Terrain lineup has changed over time, but its trim roles are easy to follow. SL is the basic entry model. The trim ladder changed by era. Many older Terrains used SL, SLE, and SLT names. Denali joined for 2013, AT4 arrived for 2022, and the newest full lineup uses Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
On third-generation Terrains, Elevation is the everyday road-focused trim. It has the 15-inch touchscreen, 11-inch driver display, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
On 2018-2024 Terrains, SLT is mainly a comfort upgrade over SLE. It adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an eight-way power driver seat, a larger touchscreen, and a hands-free power liftgate.
In the newest lineup, AT4 adds standard all-wheel drive, extra ride height, off-road suspension tuning, underbody protection, hill-descent control, and a low-speed Terrain mode. Elevation is the simpler road-focused version.
AT4 is built around rough-road ability, while Denali focuses on comfort. In recent lineups, AT4 has off-road suspension and underbody protection. Denali has leather-appointed seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, upgraded cameras, and comfort-tuned suspension.
In the newest lineup, Denali adds standard all-wheel drive, leather-appointed seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, upgraded camera views, and a suspension tuned for comfort. Both retain the same large-screen cabin layout.
On older Terrains, SL is the basic entry version and SLE adds more flexibility. For 2017-era models, SLE-1 brought heated power mirrors and both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions while keeping the core four-cylinder engine and touchscreen.
On first-generation Terrains, SLE-2 is the comfort and technology step above SLE-1. It adds upgraded touchscreen functions, premium Pioneer audio, an eight-way power driver seat, automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
On first-generation Terrains that used both names, SLT-1 is the leather comfort trim. SLT-2 builds on it with a power sunroof, power liftgate, driver-seat memory, parking sensors, and added collision and lane-departure warnings.
On 2018-2019 Terrains, both diesel trims use the 1.6-liter turbo-diesel and six-speed automatic. SLT Diesel adds leather-appointed seating, an 8-inch touchscreen, a sharper rear camera, fog lights, and interior accent lighting over SLE Diesel.
Elevation is the straightforward everyday pick in the newest lineup. It has the large screens, heated front seats and steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and folding rear seats without the trail hardware of AT4 or the luxury equipment of Denali.
AT4 is the better fit for rough roads and light trails. On newer models, it combines all-wheel drive with extra ride height, off-road suspension tuning, underbody protection, hill-descent control, and a dedicated low-speed Terrain mode.
