Because the name often describes the van’s actual hardware instead of a simple luxury level. Terms such as Low Roof, RWB, Extended Length, dual sliding doors, SRW, DRW and a weight rating identify its roof, body size, access layout, rear-wheel setup and loaded-vehicle limit.

The Cargo Van is the work-focused version, generally with two front seats and an open rear area for freight or an upfit. The XL is a factory passenger van with side windows, multiple seating rows, rear heating and air conditioning, full interior trim and passenger-area curtain airbags.

In recent years, XLT adds driver-focused comfort and assistance features over XL. On newer examples, that includes heated front seats, upgraded headlights, heated power-folding mirrors, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, a 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring.

Low roof prioritizes clearance for garages and loading areas. Medium roof balances added interior height with less exterior bulk. High roof provides the most upright working or passenger space. On newer long cargo bodies, maximum interior height is 72.0 inches for medium roof and 81.5 inches for high roof.

RWB means regular wheelbase and identifies the shorter, easier-to-maneuver body. LWB means long wheelbase and adds floor space. Extended Length adds more body behind the rear wheels for greater enclosed volume, but its extra overall length requires more room to park and turn.

SRW means one rear wheel on each side, giving the van a narrower and simpler rear setup. DRW means two rear wheels on each side. Ford uses DRW on heavier-duty extended vans where added rear support and stability matter for dense loads or substantial permanent upfits.

They are GVWR figures: the maximum permitted total weight of the van, passengers, cargo and installed equipment. A higher figure marks a heavier-duty chassis, not the cargo load by itself. The 11,000-pound configuration is the most load-focused setup listed here and uses dual rear wheels.

A low-roof RWB Cargo Van is the most city-friendly layout here. Its shorter 130-inch wheelbase helps in crowded routes and tight job sites, while the lower roof reduces clearance concerns. A sliding side door is especially useful for curbside stops and confined loading areas.

A medium- or high-roof Cargo Van is the better fit. Newer long medium-roof vans have up to 72.0 inches of cargo height, while long high-roof versions reach 81.5 inches. High roof favors upright movement; medium roof is the compromise when exterior clearance still matters.

The High Roof Extended Length body is the maximum-volume cargo layout described here, with 487.3 cubic feet behind the front seats on newer vans. Standard-duty single-rear-wheel and heavier dual-rear-wheel versions use the same large body, so the right one depends on load weight and upfit needs.

One passenger-side slider suits straightforward curbside loading. Dual sliders provide access from either side, which helps delivery routes and service upfits. Split 60/40 swing-out doors create a wide opening but need outward clearance, so they are less convenient beside walls or parked vehicles.

Both provide the tall 81.5-inch cargo height on newer long-body vans, but Extended Length adds rear body space. Recent figures show 404.3 cubic feet behind the front seats for the long High Roof and 487.3 cubic feet for High Roof Extended Length. The shorter version is easier to place in tight areas.

Low roof suits routes with tight height limits. Medium roof gives much more room to move through the cabin without the full exterior height of the tall model. High roof is the choice when upright movement and interior space matter most. Newer passenger interiors measure 52.8, 67.6 and 77.0 inches high, respectively.

XL suits straightforward group transport with durable trim, rear climate control and the core safety equipment. XLT better fits frequent or longer shuttle routes because newer examples add heated front seats, upgraded mirrors and lighting, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, a 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring.

On 2026 examples, all three use a 12-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an 8-inch driver display and push-button start. XLT still stands apart through added passenger-van comfort, lighting, mirror and driver-assistance equipment.
