Buick Enclave

Since its 2008 introduction, Enclave has been a top seller for Buick, known for its spacious interior and smooth ride. The premium crossover appeals to families and empty-nesters looking for a comfortable vehicle with a touch of elegance. Owners laud its quiet cabin, refined road manners, and user-friendly infotainment system. However, some grumble about the Enclave’s less-than-stellar fuel efficiency and occasionally slow-to-shift transmission (particularly in earlier models). Additionally, its somewhat lofty price tag can be a sticking point for budget-conscious shoppers. But overall, the Buick Enclave remains an appealing choice for used car buyers who need a roomy crossover that doesn’t compromise on comfort or style.

Buick Enclave Model Lineup

The Enclave is a midsize crossover SUV with three rows and room for seven passengers. It is the largest SUV in Buick's lineup, positioned above the compact Envision, and it shares a platform and some components with the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, which are built by Buick’s sister companies within General Motors. The Enclave’s most recent (second) generation debuted in 2018, featuring a lighter chassis, revised styling, a more powerful and efficient engine, and updated tech and safety features. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The Enclave is available in a range of trims, which (since 2018) includes the Preferred, Essence, Premium, and Avenir. The Preferred is the entry-level version but comes relatively well-equipped with features, such as heated front seats and a touchscreen infotainment system. The mid-level Essence typically adds more advanced safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, while the upscale Premium offers additional comfort items such as ventilated front seats and an upgraded audio system. The range-topping Avenir, introduced in 2018, provides the most luxurious interior, unique styling elements, and a full suite of advanced tech and safety features. Prior to 2018, its trims included the Base, the slightly upgraded Convenience, the upscale Leather, and the top-of-the-line Premium.

Throughout its history, the Enclave has primarily been powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine. In 2018, its output increased from 288 to 310 horsepower, and its automatic transmission was also upgraded from six to nine speeds. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option on most trims. Buick has not yet offered any hybrid or electric versions.

In 2018, the Enclave’s standard infotainment system was upgraded from a 6.5-inch touchscreen with basic Bluetooth connectivity to an 8-inch unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Buick further upgraded the system in 2022 to a 10.2-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity. The Enclave’s advanced safety features have seen similar improvements. Driver aids such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring have long been optional on higher trims. A rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert all became standard in 2018, and in 2022 automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist also joined the standard equipment list.

We recommend considering Buick Enclave examples from the second generation (2018-present) for their updated design and improved efficiency and tech. The Essence or Premium trims are strong choices, offering a balance of luxury amenities and advanced safety features without the premium price tag of the Avenir trim.

2014 Buick Enclave Leather FWD

Disappointed in not having keyless start. For a car that is supposedly prestigious the absence of keyless start is a major drawback for us.
