BMW X7 xDrive40i, M60i & ALPINA XB7 Trims

The xDrive40i is the everyday X7. In recent years, it pairs a 375-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assistance, all-wheel drive, air suspension, three-row seating, and the model’s core comfort and technology features.

The M60i is the newer performance-focused X7. Since the 2023 update, it has combined a 523-hp twin-turbo V8 with all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, a traction-enhancing rear differential, and sportier chassis tuning while retaining three rows.

The ALPINA XB7 is the hand-finished, ultra-luxury X7 offered from 2021 through 2026. Newer examples use a 631-hp V8, ALPINA-tuned air suspension, rear-wheel steering, distinctive cabin details, and extensive comfort equipment.

The xDrive40i favors smooth everyday performance with a turbocharged six-cylinder. Since 2023, the M60i adds a 523-hp V8, rear-wheel steering, a sport rear differential, and M-tuned suspension hardware for quicker acceleration and sharper responses.

They fill the same performance role in different eras, but they are not identical. The M50i joined for 2020 with a 523-hp V8. The M60i replaced it in 2023, adding mild-hybrid assistance, updated styling, a curved display, and revised chassis technology.

The earlier xDrive50i was the comfort-oriented V8 step above the six-cylinder model, with 456 hp and added luxury equipment. The M50i arrived later with 523 hp, stronger brakes, a sport rear differential, and more performance-focused tuning.

The Dark Shadow Edition is a limited-run version of the earlier M50i. It keeps the 523-hp V8 but adds a darker appearance and a largely fixed equipment set with advanced driver assistance, premium audio, massaging front seats, and special interior materials.

The xDrive40i is the natural everyday choice. It keeps the same three-row cabin, all-wheel drive, and air suspension as the more powerful versions, while its smooth six-cylinder engine provides strong performance without the V8-focused hardware.

Look for an xDrive50i, M50i, M60i, or ALPINA XB7, depending on the model year. The xDrive50i is the calmer early V8 model, the M50i and M60i are sportier, and the XB7 is the most exclusive and powerful.

The ALPINA XB7 puts more emphasis on long-distance comfort and a hand-finished atmosphere. The M60i remains luxurious, but its identity centers more on sharper responses and M-tuned handling. Both retain air suspension and three-row seating.
