BMW X4

Based on BMW’s popular compact luxury crossover SUV, the X3, the X4 is a sleeker and sportier -- if somewhat less practical -- version. In fact, few models in the segment are as distinctively styled as the X4, as its coupe-like appearance sets it apart from the competition. This attribute takes away from the amount of available cargo space the X4 has to offer, but if you’re the type that’s willing to trade functionality for a bit of flash, the X4 may be your bag.

BMW X4 Model Lineup

The X4 is a compact luxury crossover SUV with seating for five. It is a variant of BMW's popular X3 model with sportier “coupe-like” styling and shares some design inspiration with the larger X6, which is similarly a fastback version of the midsize X5. The X4 M is a high-performance variant of the X4 and is reviewed separately.

The X4 is available in two trims: the entry-level xDrive30i (known as the xDrive28i prior to 2019) and the more performance-oriented M40i (known as the xDrive35i prior to 2017). Each trim comes with its own engine type. Entry-level trims are outfitted with a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing between 240 and 248 horsepower, while higher-level trims receive some extra juice by way of a turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder powerplant that churns out between 300 and 382 horses, depending on the model year. Each engine is backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric variants have been offered.

As a luxury crossover, the X4 comes well equipped. Owners have been treated to a variety of infotainment display options on the X4 over the years, ranging from a standard 6.5-inch display to a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen (also standard) that arrived in 2022. Apple CarPlay first appeared as an option in 2017 before becoming standard for the 2019 model year; Android Auto joined as a standard feature for 2021. Forward collision mitigation became standard in 2019, while blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning were also added in 2021. Adaptive cruise control is also available but only through an optional package.

Missing some of the features my Lexus had Lexus Enform - I would call and they would send address to the Navigation - GPS for directions. Text messages would display on my screen while driving -

Would have liked air-conditioned seats soft close doors & automatic start & wifi. For the brand and cost it was expected.

Car does not have a rear window wiper and needs one. I looked at several luxury brands in my search and found a brand I thought was reliable and also provided the greatest value in terms of final cost to own.

Although pleased with the car: Needs grab handles near doors. Premium sound system not as good as prior years' BMW. Sound system controls STILL too complicated. Sold my previous BMW 530XI wagon because controls were too tricky

Disappointed that adding active cruise control eliminates the ability to add the cold weather package. Was able to get heated front seats but wanted the other cold-weather features. Active stop-and-go cruise control is the best feature on my car. I have 1 mile of stop-and-go traffic every day that takes 10 min. I set active cruise and it's the most relaxing 10 min and eliminates frustration.

There should be grab handles for the front driver/passengers & real coat hooks in the back seat- underpowered and not good gas mileage.

I really do not like the way the turn signal lever works. Activating is intuitive but turning it off takes such a gentle touch that I always activate the opposite direction, which always confuses the person driving behind me.
