Audi SQ5

One of the pioneers of the sporty compact luxury crossover segment, the Audi SQ5 continues to acquit itself despite growing competition in the class. This is particularly true as it relates to the SQ5’s athletic disposition. Its sharp handling and spunky V6 powertrain have left an overwhelmingly positive impact on owners. On the downside, its high cost of ownership and lackluster fuel economy have left some wanting. But on the whole, the SQ5 is surprisingly well-rounded and practical for such an energetic four-wheeled companion.

Audi SQ5 Model Lineup

The SQ5 is a performance variant of Audi’s compact luxury crossover SUV, the Q5. The five-seater is the smallest SUV in the German automaker's S lineup, measuring roughly 15 inches shorter than its larger sibling, the midsize SQ7. The SQ5 is also available in a coupe-like Sportback model, which is reviewed separately.

Audi offers the SQ5 in three trims: the entry-level Premium (which first appeared in 2019), the mid-tier Premium Plus, and the range-topping Prestige. Regardless of the level selected, it comes well-equipped. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and forward collision mitigation have been standard features on the SQ5 since 2018, while a rearview camera joined the list in 2019. In 2021, Audi upgraded the standard center touchscreen to a 10.1-inch unit, replacing the 7.0- and 8.3-inch displays from prior model years. Some advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a surround-view camera, are optional.

Motivating all SQ5 models is a boosted 3.0-liter V6 that produces around 350 horsepower. It sends power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. No hybrid or electric variants have been offered.

Steering is boring. No feel. My 06 x5 4.4 with 85k miles feels much tighter
