Audi S7

Based on the already compelling A7 liftback sedan, the S7 earns its “S” badging by adding a more powerful engine, a sportier suspension, and bigger brakes, all while retaining the premium look and feel of its sibling, not to mention its luggage-gobbling rear hatch. Owners praise the souped-up Audi both for its prodigious power and nimble handling and also for its comfortable ride, which comes thanks to a standard air suspension. Complaints arise chiefly from the S7’s steep purchase price and running costs as well as its sloping roofline, which cuts into rear-seat headroom.

Audi S7 Model Lineup

The S7 is a performance version of Audi’s midsize fastback sedan, the A7. It’s the larger of two sporty liftback sedans from the German automaker, measuring about eight inches longer than the S5 Sportback. The first generation S7 (2013-2018) features individual bucket seats in the front and rear with room for up to four passengers, while the second-gen (2020-) offers a rear bench seat instead, increasing capacity to five. An even higher output version, called the RS 7, is also available and reviewed separately.

Audi offers the S7 in two trims: the entry-level Premium Plus (which first appeared in 2017) and the range-topping Prestige. Both versions come very well equipped with luxury features, including standard leather upholstery, heated front seats, a sunroof, parking sensors, and an adaptive air suspension. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became standard in 2017, and forward-collision mitigation followed suit in 2020 (and was previously optional). Adaptive cruise control has been available as an option since the model’s 2013 debut.

First-generation S7s feature a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine powering all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Originally making 420 horsepower, the mill got a 30-hp bump for the 2016 model year. With the introduction of the second-gen S7 in 2020, Audi swapped the V8 in favor of a twin-turbo V6. Backed by an eight-speed automatic, the boosted six-cylinder makes similar power (444 hp) and about 20% better fuel economy (22 mpg combined) compared to the prior V8. No hybrid or electric versions of the S7 have been offered.
