Audi S4

In 1991, Audi brought its first high-performance “S” car to the U.S.: the S4. It has since become a sports sedan legend, garnering praise from owners for its powerful engines and dynamic handling, which is facilitated by the automaker’s advanced Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Owners also appreciate the S4 for its upscale cabin and comfortable ride quality, which makes it a practical choice for daily driving. However, some critics note higher-than-average maintenance costs and potential reliability concerns as drawbacks. Nevertheless, the Audi S4's blend of performance, luxury, and practicality makes it an appealing choice that delivers plenty of driver engagement without sacrificing everyday usability.

Audi S4 Model Lineup

The Audi S4 is a performance variant of Audi’s premium compact sedan, the A4. The five-seater slots between the smaller S3 and the midsize S6 sedans in the automaker’s performance-oriented S-car lineup. Its most recent (fifth) generation, dubbed B9, debuted in 2018, featuring updated styling, a nimbler chassis, and more advanced tech. It underwent a mild facelift for the 2020 model year.

The S4 comes in a few different trims, including the Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Premium is the base version but still comes well-equipped. The mid-range Premium Plus adds some convenience features, while the top-of-the-line Prestige trim offers a full complement of technology features and luxury amenities.

The 2018 introduction of the B9 generation saw a shift in the S4’s standard engine from a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 333 horsepower to a turbocharged unit with 349 hp, a 16 hp increase. An eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission offering for the B9 generation, while earlier versions offer both a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. All versions come standard with Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The S4’s infotainment system received a major overhaul in 2018, getting a standard 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, with an upgraded 8.3-inch unit available on higher-level trims. For 2020, the system was again revised to a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen. The model’s advanced safety features have evolved similarly. Features such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring have long been available as optional equipment on the S4, with some notable new amenities added as standard in 2018, including rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning.

We recommend that used car shoppers focus their searches on 2018 and newer examples of the S4 since they benefit from improved performance, technology, and safety features over prior model years. The Premium Plus trim offers a good balance of features and value, while the Prestige trim is ideal for those seeking additional luxury and technology.

2014 Audi S4 3.0T Sedan Quattro

5.0

I love the vehicle but I feel it has no character. It blends in with the surroundings besides the 4 Rings it almost looks like every other new car. The power delivery is good but could always be more powerful. The SQ5 runs the same engine but is faster than the S4. Interior is spot on and the sound system is amazing, but the lack of road feel in the wheel takes away from the driving experience. Now I know I'm the lower end of the market. I believe a car should be powerful have an identity to it and give you responsive feedback, unlike most Audi drivers that take the car to work and use it on a daily and try to fly under the radar.

Ask me about the quality of the vehicle. For example the placement of the optional emblems on the car. These were not placed precisely and I am disappointed that they are not perfectly placed.
