Audi Q5 Sportback

The adage “less is more” could easily apply to the Q5 Sportback. It takes Audi’s familiar compact crossover SUV, the Q5, and shaves down the rear roofline for a more athletic look. While this gives the small Audi a more distinctive appearance, it comes at the cost of some rear-seat headroom and cargo space. It typically costs more, too. Owners of the Q5 Sportback give it high marks for overall style as well as for its richly appointed cabin, which comes standard with a slew of features and tech. On the downside, its performance levels aren’t any higher than the standard Q5, making its beauty (to reference another adage) only skin-deep.

Audi Q5 Sportback Model Lineup

The Q5 Sportback is a coupe-like version of Audi’s compact crossover SUV, the Q5. It trades some of the Q5’s rear-seat and cargo space for a sportier design that features a tapered rear roofline. Audi also builds a performance version called the SQ5 Sportback, which is reviewed separately.

The Q5 Sportback comes in three trims: the entry-level Premium, the mid-tier Premium Plus, and the top-of-the-line Prestige. All versions come with a generous allotment of standard features, including LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Premium trim also includes forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning, and lane-departure warning as standard safety features. Stepping up to the Premium Plus adds keyless entry, a digital instrument panel (which Audi calls “Virtual Cockpit”), a wireless device charger, a surround-view camera, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The range-topping Prestige further includes ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, navigation, automatic parking, and a premium Bang and Olufsen audio system.

Under the hood, the Q5 Sportback features Audi’s “45 TSI” powerplant, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 261 horsepower and includes a 12-volt mild-hybrid setup. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which routes power to all four wheels via the automaker’s signature Quattro all-wheel drive system.
